Book Description

May 14, 1987
Finally back in print, Manuel Puig's celebrated first novel is a startling anatomy of a small town in thrall to its own petty lusts, betrayals, scandals, thefts, and gossip—but most of all, to the movies. Centering around a boy named Toto, privy to the town's secrets and always eager to fill in the ugly or upsetting moments of his childhood with Hollywood-inspired fantasy, Betrayed by Rita Hayworth is a symphony of disappointed, comic, bitter, and bawdy voices, all hemmed in by life's refusal to behave like the silver screen, and is perhaps the funniest and most honest coming-of-age story of its time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

First novel by Manuel Puig, published as La traicion de Rita Hayworth in 1968. This semiautobiographical novel is largely plotless. It examines the psychosocial influence of motion pictures on an ordinary town in the Pampas of Argentina. The book focuses primarily on the first 15 years in the life of Toto Casals, from 1933 to 1948. He becomes obsessed with the films that he regularly attends with his mother. Like others in the community, Toto escapes into the artificial world of popular culture, accepting and absorbing its social norms. He is, however, troubled about sexuality, particularly his own latent homosexuality. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Active Reader, June 18, 2011

If you arrived at 'Betrayed..' via Hector Babenco's film of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman',it's better to go back and read the later novel before you tackle this one. Puig is an infinitely more cinematic artist than Babenco's conventional adaptation, distortion and miscasting would suggest. It's more helpful to summon Godard,Fassbinder and Pasolini as directors and do the film grammar yourself. Otherwise you'll find the first twenty pages infuriating. The dialogue is unassigned and repetitive. There are few spatial or temporal clues about the location. The opulent fantasy and dramatic highs of a Marquez are conspicuously absent. Persist and you'll discover with what ingenuity the banal chatter is gradually introducing themes, characters, events, more in the manner of a musical canon or a mathematical equation than a novelistic narrative. That's your cue. If you want more, read.
