About the Author

Billy's son, Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Carson Vaughn (DEVGRU), was one of America's most elite warriors... one of the 300. He was engaged kinetically in the Global War on Terror and his heart beat passionately for the republic he loved. On 6 Aug, 2011 he, along with 29 other rough, fearless, American warriors, stepped into a CH-47D Chinook chopper in the black of night and headed to a mission from which they would never return. As Billy and his wife, Karen began searching for answers, their eyes were opened to vile atrocities being played out on America's military. They quickly came face-to-face with their worst nightmare...our boys shouldn't have died that night. The downing of Extortion 17 was at best unnecessary and at worst a negligent, reckless loss of life. Political games, criminal Rules of Engagement and Washington's total, wanton lack of regard for the battles our fearless warriors face on a nightly basis finally culminated in the greatest one-day loss of life in the history of Naval Special Warfare. If these atrocities had ended on August 6, 2011, Billy's battle would never have begun. But multitudes since have breathed their last --at the hands of the same disgusting lack of regard and/or criminal behavior. Our defenders deserve to be defended. The burden of their covering rests on us, the patriots of this nation. It is imperative that we stand together and demand change. Although Billy cannot be engaged in this war kinetically as Aaron was, he feels the absolute need to be engaged culturally.

As a Vietnam SEAL veteran extraordinarily concerned about our nation's descent into political correctness and nanny state weakness, I found this great book to be completely factual and written with careful attention to detail. Our "leaders" are destroying our nation and our military with stupid ROE that is killing our wonderful troops. ROE is fully explained in Betrayed. In my war ROE became popular with idiot lawyers and loser politicians. Fortunately, we worked on our own intelligence and in teams of six. We told our "allies" squat about our impending missions because they were infiltrated and not to be trusted.
Because of that we suffered far less casualties.
Wonderful military men and women are dying now because true leaders with military backgrounds are rare in politics. We worry more about Islime scum than we do about our great troops. God bless America!

If you ever had questions about what happened on August 6, 2011 then this is a must read. But it needs to be said that this book is bigger than one event. It takes a long, penetrating look at our corrupted leadership and their repeated failures to have the backs of our warriors. This book will produce a response of sorrow and anger. And, hopefully, these emotions will push us all into some form of action. We are our brother's keeper.

A well written, insightful book that opens the eyes of the reader for possibly the first time since the beginning of these "modern day" wars. I say modern day, but Vietnam must be included as the ROE's, rules of engagement, began to change as far back as Vietnam.

I hope this book will reach every member of congress and every branch of the military including the Commander in Chief. Our country is asleep at the wheel and just might come awake after reading BETRAYED.

A well written book that shines the light of truth on policies that sacrifice our warriors to the altar of political cowardice.

Great read about a sad story that should never have happened.

A father's story of a larger than life son who was inspired by 9-11 to become a Seal. The tragedy of loosing that son in an helo shootdown that should never have happened. The further story of a coverup and deception that's become all too common today.

When it seems the coverup and lies can go no further the author unveils another level of corruption and deception. Most disturbing were the notes regarding conversations with senior military officers with line responsibility for special forces in the region (unless control has been delegated to other commanders)

What's especially disturbing is that the costly lessons so tragically learned at Desert 1, Somalia and Tarkur Gahr were so casually forgotten by the armchair generals and politicians running the so called war. Desert 1 taught the special forces that their missions demanded both special air assets and pilots. Somalia taught us the hard lessons snd high of going to war without taking critical assets (AC-130's), especially when they are left behind for political reasons.

Extortion 17 taught us again the highly predictable cost of not using the right equipment, the right pilots and of neutering the AC-130 gunships. The difference between the helos is the difference between your family sedan and a NASCAR racer. It can do things your car can not do. The difference between the guard pilots and the special operations pilots is the difference between a highly skilled chauffeur, perhaps with some defensive driving skills , and the capabilities of an experienced racer.

A lot has been revealed to me about what is happening to our brave men and women in uniform. It saddens me to see this happening to our country. We should give our men the proper tools to fight and not place so many restrictions on them. They should be out to win.

This book gave me a lot to think about and I will definitely recommend it.

The story of Extortion 17 is one that sends chills up my spine. I'd heard about this from General Jerry Boykin and mentioned it in the "Factoids or Fantasies" back matter of my novel "Soft Target." But I mistakenly thought that Jerry was one of the co-authors, and the title he gave me has changed slightly, so I just now discovered this book.

I apologize for these errors, which I take full responsibility for. I will set a link to this book on the Authors Web Page for my novels, [...]

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ALL AMERICANS WHO LOVE THEIR COUNTRY. Extortion 17 happened almost a year before Benghazi and was the GREATEST SINGLE LOSS IN THE HISTORY OF SPEC OPS. I think that Congress should include this disaster when it finally appoints a Select Committee to investigate Benghazi.

I have now read this book TWICE and it tears your heart out. Obama's "Muslim Friendly" Rules of Engagement (ROEs) are empowering our enemies, advancing Islamic jihad, and getting our troops killed. The book states these ROEs can best be described as "Suicidal." I concur, and suggest that all should read these sections at the end of the book with intense attention. Thank you.

John D. Trudel is the Award Winning Author of Thriller novels, including "Privacy Wars" and "Soft Target."
