1.0 out of 5 stars A False Story
Telchin's book was given to me by a friend who stronly suggested I read it. I did. It is a heart warming story and very emotional. I can see why people get caught up in the story. Unfortunately, it turns out that the story Telchin describes in the book of his entire family converting to Christianity and living happily ever after is not truthful. In recent years, his...

An extremely moving, absorbing and powerful true story.

Stan Telchin in answering a telephone call from his daughter Judy received the worst possible message that a Jewish father could hear from his beloved daughter. The words that revealed that she had accepted Jesus as the Messiah.

To his eternal credit, Stan Telchin did not choose the path of so many in isolating and disowning his daughter. Instead he chose the path of love and tried to fully investigate her beliefs with a clear goal of trying to systematically disprove any element of truth that Judy might have in believing Jesus to be the Jewish Messiah.

Stan's studies were in depth and lengthy. The story follows him in his goal and surrounds an extremely dramatic family story in seeking out the very roots and foundations of their Jewish faith.

Stan decided to ask himself a number of questions along his journey, such as `can a Jew accept Jesus as the Messiah and remain a Jew'.

Five other basic questions formed the basis of his enquiries;-
1) Do I believe that God really exists ?
2) Do I believe that the Jewish Bible (The Tenach) is the divinely inspired word of God ?
3) Does this Bible prophesy about a coming Messiah ?
4) Is Jesus the Messiah ?
5) If he is, what does that do to me ?

Follow Stan Telchin as he pours over the Scriptures and the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with Christians through the ages. See how he comes to terms with the hostility of many elements of the so-called Christian church, the anti-Semitism emanating from so many, and his arrival at the Truth.

Stan, despite being the ultimate critic and with such a heart-felt agenda to restore his Jewish daughter from Christianity, finds that he too can only arrive at one decision. That being that all the Scriptures and all the prophesies can only prove one thing...Jesus is in fact who He says He is...the Messiah.

Stan's acceptance of this fact and the birth of his own Christian/Messianic faith (or however you wish to describe it) is treated with hostility by the vast majority of his Jewish `friends' and he finds isolation and hatred amongst those who once accepted him with open arms.

This is an enthralling story. Beautifully written and can be read in one day. Do yourself a favour and get this book, irrespective of your religion or faith. Everyone could do with studying the examples of those described herein. Best wishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to a Jewish Perspective on Jesus, April 17, 2000

Some religious Jewish people will be offended by this book and that cannot be helped. Any book which presents a controversial topic is going to get slammed. But the fact is, and Stan presents it very well and very readably, there is a strong case to be made for the Messiahship of Jesus. Stan shows how one Jewish person, with a good Jewish education and strong ties to the Jewish community, looked at the evidence and was convinced. Those who do not find the evidence presented by Stan convincing can nonetheless see his sincerity throughout. With a Masters degree in Hebrew Bible, I feel qualified to say that the passages from the Hebrew Bible that Stan discusses are almost all translated very well and Stan's interpretation is sound in nearly every instance. I have seen this book change the lives of Christians and Jews alike and have given away dozens of copies myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, July 19, 2000
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
Despite the negative reviews from some readers, the reasons they give are subjective. (i.e. - they disagree with Mr. Telchin's conclusions). Nevertheless, this is an excellent book on the topic at hand (one family's search for the Messiah). Saying you disagree with their conclusions doesn't make this a bad book, or even a dangerous one.

On the contrary. I found the level of research done by Mr. Telchin extraordinary. The accusations of misinterpretation notwithstanding, he addresses a lot of scriptures which not a few people (Jews included) have accepted as speaking of the Messiah, and gives "his" reasons for believing that they point to the historical Jesus.

I found it fascinating, and illuminating from a Jewish perspective of Jesus' Messianic claims.

5.0 out of 5 stars Description of a man's search for truth about the Messiah, December 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
Stan Telchin describes how angry he was when his daughter converted from Judaism to Christianity. Most of the book describes his research in the Jewish Old Testament and history, in an attempt to prove to his daughter that the New Testament was false and not to be trusted. Instead, as a result of his research, Stan became convinced that Jesus was the Messiah, even though he fought it for months. Then his friends became extremely angry with him, for the same reason he was angry with his daughter. Stan gives a great comparison of OT prophecy and how Jesus fulfilled them. Both Christians and Jews alike forget that Jesus and Jews were about the only Christians for about the first 100 or so years. Gentile Christians became a majority in the new church only after 200 AD or so.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books reconsiling Judaism & Christianity., January 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Betrayed (Paperback)

Stan Telchin has faced one of the most difficult situations a man could face. Stan had to choose between the daughter he loved and his faith..

For those outside the Jewish faith, it is very difficult to imagine the sadness of a much loved daughter apparently rejecting all that she was brought up to believe (Family values are still very strong within the Jewish community).

Stan, throughout the book describes the search he made into his faith and the roots of Judaism, this being the result of his daughter's new found faith. He discovered the possibility that his daughter had found something which answered many of his questions.

An ideal book for Jewish people who are faced with a member of their family changing to what appears to be a foreign faith.

For the Christian, this book is NOT about the victory of another convert, but a book about the search for the true Hebrew roots of Judaism and our Christian heritage. It is also a book which causes us to walk humbly before our G'd.

The Jewish people have always expected Messiah to come to their aid. - Y'shua (that is J'sus,) according to His followers, believe Him to be that person. Could Y'shua be that long awaited Messiah Stan's daughter now believed in?

This is Stan's story, it's better to leave him to tell you the rest. A very enjoyable, heart lifting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, July 28, 2001
By
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
The book was very well written and continued to capture my attention as I read. It was interesting to see how thorough he researched the claims of the new testament and the messianic prophcies of the old (3 months worth of looking into a subject!). I must respectfully disagree with one reviewer who said that the whole family came to faith in a few days (it was 3+ months) - I wondered how well he really paid attention as he read the book. And also to his reference to the Hebrew words "Alma" and "Betula" - he should now that although "alma" (found in Isaiah 7:14) does not HAVE to refer to a virgin, it does denote a young single woman of marrying age (with the unspoken assumption being that she IS a virgin) - shame on him for refering to the Hebrew word as if it was an open and shut case! Regardless of that one closed minded reveiwer - it really is an excellent book well worth your time to read (and I have programed in Basic and would rather read the book! : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of my life!, June 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
Telchin's book was recommended by my (recently) Christian daughter away at college. Her pastor thought I might like it ( I was sure she got into some cult)! Well, this 3-hour read began a journey for which I will hopefully be eternally grateful. The book is heartfelt, historically interesting and real. Highly recommended for Jews exploring Christianity, or Christians wishing more understanding of their Jewish friends. Some of my family's objections have been predictable (I bought each of them a copy). "Contrived, simple-minded, false premise." Its also interesting to note that each reader had little or no foundation in practicing Judaism, generally aspiritual lifestyles, even one athiestic Jew (always an oxymoron if you ask me). No, I'm not a Jew turned pastor, but this book opened my heart to deeper and meaningful exploration into bible study (New and Old), church attendance, and a Christian men's group studying methods of "authentic manhood" by Robert Lewis (a fascinating and vital program if men are ever to return to the spiritual leaders they were designed to be). Telchin's story opens the door for searching Jews to begin a journey towards acceptance of Christ as who he said he was, and who he was foretold to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL AND CAPTIVATING, COULD NOT PUT DOWN., May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
This is an important book that introduces the Christian believer into huge obstycles in Jewish heritage and culture that close out the gospel of Jesus Christ (Messiah). Complete understanding of the Jewish roots of the Messiah are necessary before effective evangelization, much less just geeting an ear from a Jew. Powerfully written and captivating personal story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Betrayed, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
This is an easy to read yet significant story on how a Jewish family came to understand that Jesus is, in fact, the Messiah promised to them in their sacred Scriptures. The author tells about his concerted efforts to disprove that assertion, but how the more research he did,the more he realized the truth.

I gave this book to a Jewish friend of mine who at one time had declared that Jews for Jesus were traitors. After reading this book, she has become very open to learning more about it, and has passed the book on to other members of her family. This is evidence that the book presents its assertions to Jews in an effective, non-offensive manner.

The one thing I felt the book lacked was explaining why it's so crucial for Jews as well as Gentiles to believe that Jesus is the Messiah/Christ, and to know him as their Lord and Savior.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the christian and Jew alike, August 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Betrayed! (Paperback)
This book is a very enlightening resource for both Jews and Christians alike. Stan's intensive research on the subject reveals what most believers know; if you read both the OT and NT and consider all the prophecies, then it is undeniable that Jesus is the Messiah. This book also touches on why there became such a seperation between early Jewish believers and gentile believers and why it has become such an obstacle today. For more on this subject read Telchin's other book abandoned which addresses the seperation in more detail from both a historical and theological perspective. This book is not damaging to the Jewish people;on the contrary, it tells of the true fulfillment of the Jewish faith!
