An introduction to the life of the Philadelphia seamstress credited with sewing the first American flag.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Very much in the style, size, and format of David Adler's "Picture Book Biographies" (Holiday), which she and her husband illustrated, Wallner now goes solo to tell Betsy Ross's story. She weaves facts that are known about the woman's life into the straightforward narrative. Naive folk-art paintings suit the subject well. Engaging examples of 18th-century colonial American life-spinning wheels, fireplace cookery, quill pens, and candlesticks-and even a number of playful cats can be found on every page. The book concludes with directions for making a five-pointed star. An author's note addresses some of the conflicting claims to the flag's origins. An appealing picture of American history, an easy-to-read biography, and an accessible curricular piece for Flag Day.

From Booklist

Ages 5-8. As the author-illustrator reports in an afterword, there are conflicting accounts of Ross' life and her place in history as maker of the new American nation's first flag. With that caveat and noting the main source for this version of the story, Wallner describes Ross' childhood, marriages, upholstery business, suggestion to General Washington to use a star with five points rather than six, sewing of the flag, and family and business concerns until her death in 1836. Large, colorful illustrations use bright colors and many details to tell the story and re-create the period. The book ends with diagrams and directions for folding and cutting paper to make a five-pointed star. Showing Ross as a successful businesswoman as well as a good seamstress is a good touch. An appealing depiction of one of the few women famous in American history and/or legend. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Book For Teaching About Betsy Ross!, June 8, 2000
This review is from: Betsy Ross (Paperback)
Wallner's text and illustrations are masterful! Simply told, this story will teach kids all about Betsy Ross and the legend behind her creation of our nation's greatest symbol. An author's note provides some background about conflicting stories in history regarding her life. Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Betsy Ross, February 18, 2003

This book is very informational. I did not know of her background, only that she was responsible for making our country's flag. I think that children would be surprised, just as I was, to learn of her history.

3.0 out of 5 stars The pictures make it look younger than it actually is...., February 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Betsy Ross (Hardcover)
I bought this for my second-grader because she had to do a report on
a famous American. The pictures were great, but it had a lot of information
in it that she wasn't familiar with yet such as "Quakers", "Colonists", etc.
I was looking for a very elementary intro to Betsy Ross, but this was
a little too old for her. I read it to her, but since she hasn't studied
the revolution, colonial America, etc. it was over her head and she thought
it was boring. The pictures are great and it would be perfect for a child in
at least third grade....or any child who understands a little about the founding
of our country.
