5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfectly crafted album
Midler's platinum 1995 release is a perfect example of the pop/rock genre like Bette's Some People's Lives. This album is PERFECTLY crafted. Midler is classy on the new-age sounding ballad To Comfort You. To Deserve You and The Last Time prove Midler's ability to shine on current rock sounds. The remixes of To Deserve You reached #2 on the dance charts. The Last Time...

3.0 out of 5 stars ONLY...OK
The best part of this cd is the cover. Beautiful. Right up there with the cover to "Some People's Lives". But the music leaves a lot to be desired. "I Know This Town" is sweet and catchy. The lyrics and melody are wistful, perfect for Bette's beautiful voice. "It's Too Late" will make you cry, it is just heartbreaking and anybody who has gone through a painful breakup...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfectly crafted album, October 13, 2001

Midler's platinum 1995 release is a perfect example of the pop/rock genre like Bette's Some People's Lives. This album is PERFECTLY crafted. Midler is classy on the new-age sounding ballad To Comfort You. To Deserve You and The Last Time prove Midler's ability to shine on current rock sounds. The remixes of To Deserve You reached #2 on the dance charts. The Last Time is an excellent vocal piece for Midler. As a rock song, Midler's voice is low and pissed as the lyrics indicate the pain Midler's man is causing her. She jumps to falsetto in a heartbeat as she sings about he puts her back together after the pain. Bed of Roses and It's Too Late are absolutely dynamic ballads with flawless vocals by Midler. As Dreams Go By and I Believe In You are upbeat, inspirational pop numbers. This album is for anyone and everyone, BUT IT NOW!!!! If you love this Bette album, you'll love these other Bette albums: The Divine Miss M, Broken Blossom, Some People's Lives, Beaches soundtrack, Bathhouse Betty, Bette. Support Bette Midler! 5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing to the mind and spirit, May 28, 2000

Bette of roses, what a perfect name for a great album by the DEVINE MISS.M. This album is very realistic, and will move anyone, with the lyrics, and moodenhancing music. Only Bette Midler could bring these songs so much alive, with her voice that never fails! My favourites on this album are 'In this life' 'Bed of roses ' and 'To deserve you'. This album is for anyone who thinks their lives are difficult,or who feel alone, and this album makes you feel like Bette Midler is your friend, she sings from the heart, warm an genuine .

3.0 out of 5 stars ONLY...OK, January 8, 2004

The best part of this cd is the cover. Beautiful. Right up there with the cover to "Some People's Lives". But the music leaves a lot to be desired. "I Know This Town" is sweet and catchy. The lyrics and melody are wistful, perfect for Bette's beautiful voice. "It's Too Late" will make you cry, it is just heartbreaking and anybody who has gone through a painful breakup will appreciate the sentiment of this song. "Bed of Roses" will also make you cry. Cry over the fact that this has got to be the most boring song ever written. "To Deserve You" is a danceable and an all around good song. Maria Mckee is one of the most overlooked songwriters around. There are also dance mixes to this song but the original version is the definitive one. "I Believe in You" also is one of the better songs. I remember my parents had this song in the early '80s I think. It was by a country singer named Don Gibson, who just passed away. Bette changes some of the lyrics around but that is just fine. A nice way to close the album. "Bottomless" is enjoyable and "The Last Time" (another Maria McKee song) rocks out and is perfect for Bette. I am writing this review by memory and these are the only song titles I can remember. It is that unremarkable. Ask me to name all of the songs on "Thighs and Whispers", "No Frills" or "Bette". I'd be able to. They are classic Bette. All in all just an ok album from one of the music world's most perfect singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Album, November 12, 2003
This review is from: Bette of Roses (Audio CD)
Bette Midler's 1995 album BETTE OF ROSES is one of her best. This was her first album since 1990's SOME PEOPLES LIVES. She shows that she can take contemporary stylings and adapt them to her own vocals and style. "To Deserve You" was the big hit from the album, hitting #2 on the club charts. It's a great song full of passion. "In This Life" is a beautiful ballad, one of the best on here. Words just can't explain the beauty of this album. She shows her rock stylings on "The Last Time" which really utilize her vocals well, and she sounds great. "Bottomless" is a dreamy, beautiful ballad. "As Dreams Go By" is another great ballad on the set. Most of the songs are ballads, but they work well with her voice. The opener "I Know This Town" is a nice midtempo song about going back to visit your hometown to see that everything has changed. "It's Too Late" is just heartbreaking, but beautiful. Overall it's a great album, especially if you enjoyed her SOME PEOPLES LIVES and BEACHES work.

Don't buy this if you are looking for the wild and crazy Bette; but run, don't walk, to purchase this if you enjoy Bette's more classic ballad style. Very soothing.

I loved this CD.Its a first for Bette.Just radio friendly songs. My favorite is the single,"To Deserve you." Every song justs flows, and the background vocals Bette sings with her leads are beutifull. There's no campy songs,or funny numbers Bette usually has on her records, but I really enjoyed the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bette at her best, April 20, 2000

This is most probably Bette's best album, she's made since her early years. The songs are beautifully performed by Bette's fantastic voice. There are mostly (BEAUTIFUL! ) ballads, but also it goes into rock (The last time). The outtake single "To deserve you" inclusive the remixes and the video clip is actually one of Bette's greatest hits. Unfortunately the album wasn't so successful (I don't know why), but whether you're are a Bette-Fan or just a music lover...go and get this album. It's worth it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful, but safe collection of pop ballads, July 21, 2003

Midler's penchant for syrupy ballads continues on this 1995 release. Despite the ballad-heavy set list, the album is not as soapy and stiff sounding as SOME PEOPLE'S LIVES or the soundtrack to BEACHES. Though not as strong as THE DIVINE MISS M or BETTE MIDLER, BETTE OF ROSES is still a pleasant record.
The songs are carefully, immaculately produced pop ballads, some with vague influences of rock, folk or country. The fact that the songs all are ballads does tend to bog the record down a bit.

There are, however, some good songs, and one brilliant song. The best track is the dramatic "To Deserve You." The maudlin lyrics aside, the vocal arrangement has Midler using almost her whole range in the song, which is remarkably powerful and expressive. From the half-spoken verses, to the full-throated refrain, the song is one of Midler's best performed tunes.
The other bright spots, including the title track, "To Comfort You," and the gently nostaglic "I Know This Town" are all good songs, well performed, though they do not reach the heights of "To Deserve You." The other songs are well-done, extremely professional A/C pop, that tends to be quite homogenized and unremarkable.

I love Bette, but I think of all the CD's I own, and I know that is a lot, this truly is the best. This is the only CD I own and know of that everytime I listen to it, I get emotional. Masterful and delicate like the goddess Bette is. Please buy this CD.
