4.0 out of 5 stars The left and right heating elements do not have equal power
I just received this item today. It was packaged well and arrived undamaged.

When I opened it I noticed that the two burners are different from each other. The burner on the left is labeled as COOK/BOIL and the right-hand burner is labeled REHEAT/SIMMER.

In operation, the right-hand burner only gets half as hot as the left.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good price fair heating
This unit (better chef buffet dual burner) for the price is an ok item. It will not boil water over 4 quarts a cup of water boils nicely. One problem I have with this item when you flip the switch both burners are on no matter how low you set the dial. It is not a huge deal but make sure you dont put your hand down on it thinking it was off.

While this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the Amazon description of this item, I feel it's still a good value at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Chef Buffet Burner, January 19, 2009

I bought this as a gift and the person I bought it for LOVES it!.. While it's meant to be an EXTRA couple of burners, this person lives in a cabin w/electric, but no stove.. He said that his pots and pan fit great on it and he likes the different wattages. It works so fast, that he said it boils water in 2 minutes!!! It's also easy to clean.

This is the third brand of double burner that I purchased, and they all have the same problem. They work fine until a pot of water boils over. The water runs down inside the case and you get a big flash and a cloud of smoke, and shorted out fried electrics. Even the "flat plate" types have his problem. Can't use induction types because the pots and pans are stainless or other non-magnetic materials. I'd love to see someone make an affordable two burner portable ceramic cooktop. Until then, I'll keep buying cheap single burners and consider them to be disposable.

2.0 out of 5 stars not great, August 1, 2011

It works, but has some serious design flaws. First, the heating elements are not solidly stable, so that they may tilt or unseat. If they become unseated when they are hot, you have to jiggle them back with an oven mitt or something. Second, there is only one on-off switch. This means that when the unit is turned on, both burners are on. Even if you turn one you aren't using down to MIN, it is still warm. If you forget and leave it higher, it's dangerous. Would it have been so hard to put two switches on the thing?

As noted by others, the two burners have different settings. It hasn't been a drawback for me, though. I'm working with very limited space for cooking, as it goes, so having more than one pot boiling isn't necessary. Besides, the lower setting on one burner is quite sufficient to keep something simmering while the other boils or cooks.

Nice design, too. The brushed steel finish looks great, contrasted by the black knobs and burners.

Overall, I think it's well worth what I paid for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice burner, August 29, 2011

Ordered this burner anticipating power outage/s during recent hurricane Irene. After reading many reviews related to other, similar burners on Amazon, I selected this unit because of good price & simplicity. Used it straight with my Honda 2KW portable gas generator(no other devices) but your milage may vary based on your power source. At first time use, the coils gave out a little smoke temporarily but, I think that's supposed to be normal. The unit is not heavy but has a sturdy feeling base, good for mid size pots/pans (I used pots similar in diameter to the coils). The unit's size felt just right with enough spacing between the coils. The coils seem well supported. The brushed steel finish looks nice and the overall finish/quality is very good. The hot side coil becomes red hot at full setting and I was able to cook/boil as needed. The adjustment dial/s worked well. The 2nd. coil (as mentioned in specifications) is for warm/low settings only and seemed to work as described. I did not feel the coils cycling on/off automatically as mentioned in some other, comparable burner's reviews on Amazon. Unit's power cord didn't feel robust/long but worked just fine. A few hours of cooking time have not really shown any flaws. As I don't plan to use it everyday, I can't comment on long term life/performance right now. I have not yet tested it with standard, household power but I'd assume that it can only work better? Overall I'm pleased with the unit & think it was worth the money, especially for my intended ocassional use.

This product looks as if it's made of aluminum foil. It's already the worse for wear just from shipping. Returning and will try another brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Chef for sure!, January 10, 2012

This item is lightweight, easy to move around, and with the brushed stainless look will fit most kitchen decors. It has one "full range" burner and one "warmer" element. It suits my needs perfectly. So far, it works perfectly with no issues and is a good value.
