This review is from: The Better Days Books Frugal Food Bible: Practical Advice for Feeding Your Family During Hard Economic Times From Americans Who Survived and Thrived In Tougher Times Than These (Paperback)
The Frugal Food Bible is filled with great recipes, so yes, it IS a cookbook... But it is so much more besides. This "Bible" brings together in one volume four long out of print books from times in our Nation's past when the economy was a whole lot worse than it is in America today. Our little "economic crisis" is nothing compared to the Great Depression, or to the way things were, around the world, just before America entered WWI, or even in the early 1800's, when the whole economy collapsed under President Andrew Jackson. I knew little to nothing about these historic events or how very hard things were for people in those times (so much worse than what we face today!) before reading this book. So The Frugal Food Bible came as a rather heart-wrenching education for me in the stamina, ingenuity and all-around greatness of our forefathers (and especially our fore-mothers!), who never, ever gave up, never whined and waited for a bailout, and who never forgot that true wealth comes not from having an abundance of money or material possessions, but from conscious frugality and a commitment to live fully, creatively and joyfully within one's means, however great or meager those means. Yes, The Frugal Food Bible is a cookbook, but it is also a great source of inspiration to all of us who are struggling to make ends meet, and especially to ensure that economic pressures in the world around us do not steal the joy of living from our precious families and homes. We can't do much about the economic crisis out there. But there is a whole lot we can do to preserve our families and make ends meet with smiles on our faces. The Frugal Food Bible is a fantastic resource for helping us understand our present times in a historical context, and for gaining a "taste" of the spirit and mental attitude that enables and ennobles us to rise above our times and live frugally, gracefully and well.
