4.0 out of 5 stars Shawn Mullins' older music is a gem!
I ordered this disc after I could not take Soul's Core out of my CD player. This is just as good....one of those discs you need to listen to a few times to really appreciate, then you find yourself singing the songs in your head for days. A real gem of an album.

1.0 out of 5 stars No comparison to later work
For those of you who have listened and enjoyed the 1998 release Souls Core and have also been fortunate to pick up 1996's Egg Shells, then this CD will greatly disappoint you. Recorded in 1992, his musical style and singing/songwriting approach was basically not yet developed into what has become a tremendous talent. This is almost like listening to a John Denver...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best of Shawn Mullins' albums, easily!, November 17, 1999

Although it does not have the same feeling of his more recent work in "Soul's Core," this is where Shawn Mullins' roots are. I attended college with him at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA, and had the great opportunity to see him perform at fraternity parties and downtown. "Everchanging World" is a classic, and the best song on the album -- this is college music, folksy and singable. If you're a Mullins fan, it's a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars not shawn's best, but definitely a keeper, August 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Better Days (Audio CD)
this was the fourth mullin's cd i bought, and i'll have to say, i liked his other three better, but this one still deserves a five star rating. you can tell he hasen't developed as a songwriter/musician yet, but i can still just throw it in the cd player and listen to the whole album and not be bored. "the dream" has a nice chorus line and a beautiful meaning, and i loved the live "Casey's last ride". "just like me" is one of my favorites and i can listen to that over and over. if you're looking for a cd to compliment Soul's Core, i recommend Eggshells, but if you just can't get enough of Shawn Mullins, definitely check out Better Days.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Shawn Mullins, March 31, 2002
By A Customer

For anyone that loves Shawn's "new stuff", Better Days is a must! This is the best of Shawn! I've had this CD (actually my first copy was a tape) since 1993 and I haven't gotten tired of it yet. I listen to it at least once a week unlike all of my other trendy CD's I sell in about two months. It's a relaxing escape that takes me away from the real world to a beautiful scene in the Appalachian Mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars catchy hooks great lyrics make it worth a listen, June 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Better Days (Audio CD)
Shawn's voice sounds incredibly young in the song "belong" but after that it loosens up to the voice you know and love. "this time/last time" is a catchy song that'll draw in you in and get you groovin. He takes a darker side with sounds like "locked in my room" and "just like me" All the songs on here have great catchy hooks that'll stay with you long after the player is turned off. And there is a great cover of "casey's last ride" a kris kristofferson song. Shawn was young when he cut this record, and you can tell, but it has great lyrics and a great sound, the production is tight. Hell, the man is an all around musical genious. I suggest gettin all of shawn's cd's. They all are good listening.

If you like music that will inspire your day, or can just make you feel beter by hearing sad or happy stories, this is the cd for you. I have listened to it inside out. One of the songs that is on the cd and is not listed to listen to has a great lyric line that goes..."And on the rainy night, two lovers held eachother tight in the moonlight." it's just so preatty!

5.0 out of 5 stars His First, but not worst :), December 7, 2006

This review is from: Better Days (Audio CD)
Many artists have forgettable first albums, but not this one. This was the second CD I got of Shawn Mullins when I lived in Atlanta. I used to go see him play as often as I was able. I have wonderful memories of Eddie's Attic and Shawn playing, just him and his guitar. He never needed or needs anything more to be amazing.

My favorite tracks on this CD: "Belong", "This Time/Last Time", "Same Old Thing", "Buckdance", "Everchanging World", and "Casey's Last Ride". I like all the tracks on this album, but these are the songs I return to over and over.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Shawn before he "hit it big" and he was gracious, humble, and kind to what I assume he thought was a silly teenage girl, at the time. Over the last 12 years, his music has sincerely touched my life in more ways than I can ever say. He is none of the most amazing storytellers in the world of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Better Days" is better than "Soul's Core!", January 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Better Days (Audio CD)
For those of you just discovering Shawn Mullins via "Lullaby" look long and hard for "Better Days." My wife went to high school with Shawn in Clarkston, Georgia. She introduced me to his music years ago. This CD remains in my top ten. From the awesome "This time/ Last time" to the obligatory Kristofferson cover "Casey's last ride" this disc perfectly showcases Shawn's talents as a singer and songwriter. Unfortunately, with the long overdue recognition that has come with the release of "Soul's Core" I won't be seeing him at that 100 seat venue anymore! GET THIS DISC NOW!

This is almost like listening to a John Denver CD.(sorry) My suggestions is to not bother and purchase Eggshells if you are looking for another Shawn Mullins CD to compliment Souls Core. Eggshells, with tremendous songs like "Where's Johnny," "Joshua," "Darbys Castle" and an acoustic version of "Shimmer" will rival anything Mullins puts out. It just wasn't there yet in 1992.
