5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK FOR BEGINNER OR EXPECT CANNERS!!
Thanks to my grandmother, I have been canning since I was young. This cookbook caught my eye so I ordered it and have tried several of the recipes. They are all excellent and so easy to prepare. From jams to bread and butter pickles this very thin and colorful book contains a lot of extremely tastey recipes that your friends and family will love. The measurements are...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Choice
High points of this book include good safety notes, some basic charts and tips on easily peeling various fruits tucked throughout the pages. I was also pleased to see that it contained two canned soup recipes. On the other hand, the recipes were primarily chutneys, jams and other items that were neither unqiue nor particularly varied. I was extremely disappointed with the...

From jams to bread and butter pickles this very thin and colorful book contains a lot of extremely tastey recipes that your friends and family will love. The measurements are exact and the recipes easy to follow. Great for any cook that enjoys preserving or as a gift to someone who wants to try something different in the kitchen. I can't recommend enough!!!

This is a great book--I borrowed it from my sister-in-law and loved it so much I just ordered my own. It has great recipes and beautiful gift ideas, as well as a guide to general canning of all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Choice, July 22, 2010

High points of this book include good safety notes, some basic charts and tips on easily peeling various fruits tucked throughout the pages. I was also pleased to see that it contained two canned soup recipes. On the other hand, the recipes were primarily chutneys, jams and other items that were neither unqiue nor particularly varied. I was extremely disappointed with the inclusion of modified food starch in the apple pie filling - isn't avoiding modified or unnatural ingredients one of the great motivations for canning to begin with? Regardless of your level of canning experience or what you're looking to put up, I suggest you skip this book and try one of the much better options available (Putting Food By or Ashley English's Canning & Preserving being excellent alternatives).

Definitely on the short side, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small But Excellent Book for Both Beginners and Experienced Canners, October 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Better Homes and Garden Presents: America's All Time Favorite Canning & Preserving Recipes (Paperback)
There are three canning books I turn to again and again, and this is one of them. I bought this copy as a gift for my sister, who, like me, loves to can. For the beginner the book is particularly valuable because while providing all necessary information required to can, it is presented in a way that doesn't overwhelm or intimidate a novice. I've read canning cookbooks that were written by actual or pseudo chemists and they would have discouraged more potential canners than encouraged. A small book, but quite valuable, it is great for all skill levels. The assortment of recipes will keep a canner's interest, and all I've tried are delicious. In contrast, I have many large canning books that I never use, so don't let the size fool you.

I also appreciate the care taken in the construction of the recipes which are created with time-saving in mind -- something I simply haven't seen in any other canning cookbook. You recognize this when you've looked at twenty different recipes for example, the dill pickle or pepper jam recipes. The Dill Pickles rival any I've prepared and require almost no preparation time -- no long brining period. The Cranberry-Pepper Jelly is wonderful, particularly served with Goat Cheese, and unlike other recipes I've tried, takes much less preparation time and is just as delicious. The Spiced Blueberry Jam and Pineapple Marmalade are staples in my house and used at Christmas as small gifts to give to anyone who appears at my door. I would not want to be without this book and highly recommend it to all canners.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Ages of American Cuisine, January 20, 2002

If you liked the food in the 50's in the midwest, then you'll love this book. But, if you live in the 21st century on either coast, then you'll think you've slipped and fallen into a time warp. The recipes in this book emphasize such "all-time favorites" as corn relish and pickled watermelon rind and suggest such exotica as bland, but chunky pasta sauce.

I give it one star for its history of culture value and no stars for the recipes. I suspect that most [...] will be amazed at far we've come from the Dark Ages of American cuisine.
