As someone who wrote a weekly column about the joys of fresh produce for 20 years, it was hard not to fall in love with this latest offering from Better Homes & Gardens. Many of the 300 recipes presented here offer some surprising flavor combinations and pairings, such as blueberry and corn in a salad, a trio of radishes, bacon and beans as an appetizer, and a sandwich filling created using muenster cheese, cabbage and thinly sliced apples. Better Homes & Gardens Fresh not only emphasizes making recently harvested crops the centerpiece of your menu planning, it also reminds us that to every thing, there is a season and all fruits and vegetables are at their peak of taste and flavor when enjoyed when their harvest is ripe, rather than year-round for our convenience. This cookbook is well worth getting for the user-friendly last section alone, which is a comprehensive produce guide. BHG's efforts to put the kitchen spotlight on everything fresh from the garden and field -- well done!

It's time to get acquainted with your farmers' market and greengrocer. It's time to plant an herb garden, or at least plant some herb seeds in and around your flower garden. If you can't do that, well, then it's time to start spending more time in your grocery store's produce department than you do in the canned and frozen food isles.

This book is loaded with ideas for bringing fresh ingredients into your dishes. If you are an experienced cook, this book may be a bit too "old hat" for you. But if chopping fresh herbs is not a part of your every day routine, if you still store a fresh tomato in the frig, if you've never thought to incorporate fresh fruit as another dimension in a main dish, if your pasta and dessert sauces come from a jar, well, this book is for you.

If you are looking for cookbooks to present to someone new to the kitchen, this is a very well-done, all-encompassing compilation of recipes. The pictures are plentiful. The layout is easy to read and to follow. Recipe ingredients and directions are precise and accurate.

The book takes you from breakfast through dessert. It covers soups, appetizers, stews, all kinds of salads (starter and main meal), chicken, meats, fish, side dishes, plus more. By the time you've worked your way through the book, you will have worked with almost every vegetable, fruit and herb available. You will also have used every standard cooking technique, too. Ingredient lists are not shallow, and you will realize full flavor from these recipes. Ingredients are not hard to find nor overly-expensive.

This is NOT a "how-to" cookbook: You will not find step-by-step pictures, and the directions assume the cook either has common sense or an understanding of the basics.
