I've owned this book for years, and though sadly it's now out of print, it is readily available from used booksellers right here ... . This book has some really wonderful recipes, many of them out-of-the-ordinary, and many traditional ethnic cookies (marked as Swedish or Finnish, and so-on) organized into sections such as bar cookies, drop cookies, refrigerator cookies, shaped cookies, holiday cookies and so on. There are full-color pictures of almost every cookie. The recipes are interspersed with illustrated instructions and tips, and there are sections of the book dedicated to decorating cookies, storing cookies, giving cookies as gifts and how best to pack each type, and a list of recipes in the book which are "good travelers." I highly recommend that anyone who loves making and giving cookies, especially during the holidays, pick up this book.

This one has been around for a few years - almost 40 of them now. There have been at least two reprints and reissues of this book that I know of. There is a reason for this and than reason is that there are some very good cookie recipes in this slender volume and some very good directions on how to bake them. We are now on our second copy of this work, the first long worn out and in various pieces and very near unusable.

The majority of cookies in this book are pretty simple and basic although it does have a fare share of fancy cookies which are a bit more complex yet remain doable for the average baker (I call these fancy type cookies `Martha Stewart" cookies...excellent cookies indeed but not necessarily what you grab for in the middle of the night while reading.

Over the years I don't think there is one cookie in this book that either my wife or I have not made and we have not had one failure...all have been excellent eats. Now I grant you that we did like some more than others but that was a matter of personal taste rather than a faulty recipe.

In general, the following types of cookies are covered:

Everyday Bar Cookies
Festive Bar Cookies
Show-Off Brownies
Easy Drip Cookies
Refrigerator Cookies
Sprightly Shaped Cookies
Holiday Favorites
Teatime Fancies

There are sections covering selecting, decorating storing, packing and gifting cookies. There are also numerous side bars...hints on how to make the baking job easier and more effective. This is an ideal book for both the beginner and the advanced baker of cookies.

I bought this to replace my original copy, which finally fell apart after 30 years, so I knew what the book would be like. It has a great variety of cookies, with varying levels of difficulty. Some are familiar, some not so much, but every recipe I have tried has been good. It's a great resource to use for making cookies to give at Christmas. This is the first cookbook I pull when I want to find a good cookie recipe.

As a child in the 80s my mom pulled this cookbook out every Christmas to do some of the baking. It has some really great recipes...including the best oatmeal cookies I have ever tasted, festive bars called Nutty Noels, and some awesome brownies. I highly recommend this cookie cookbook for the sweets lover. It might be out of print, but the recipes stand the test of time.

I couldn't have been happier with the Better Homes and Gardens Homemade Cookies Cook Book. It came in the condition promised to me and will be a handy and useful reference for years to come. I haven't purchased many items through Amazon, but I plan to be much more of a customer in the future. Thank you, Amazon, for making the process so easy.
