Best IEP how-to book I have read so far!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Better IEPs : How to Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs (Paperback)
I just got this book and am already halfway through. It gives clear, concise IEP writing tips and lots of examples. I prefer this book over others I have previously purchased. I would say it is an essential book for parents of special education students to have, along with Wrightslaw: Special Education Law."

The Best Resource for "Getting It Right",
By
This review is from: Better IEPs : How to Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs (Paperback)
This is a book that every school's Child Study Team should read and use as an informed guide to improve the planning and writing of IEPs. Since that will not happen, parents will find this to be an excellent means of knowing what they should expect to see in an IEP, and what to reject. The writing is jargon-free and otherwise friendly to parents and professionals alike. It can lead parents to develop "suggested" goals and objectives as model examples to show the school staff. It provides an excellent foundation for the inservice training of school staff and special education parent support groups.

IEP GOALS,
By Susan Burnett (Yorba Linda, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Better IEPs : How to Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs (Paperback)
This book should be required reading for every parent who has a child on an IEP. Assessment generates services and IEP goals, and goals inform the parent whether the services are remediating the child. Schools must follow the Law (IDEA) on how to write goals, yet, poorly written IEP goals is one of the biggest non-compliance areas. If a child's progress can not be objectively measured by correctly written goals, how are we to determine the effectiveness of the schools intervention? If you want to hold your school accountable for remediating your child, Bateman's book is a must. This book will help you be an active participant in developing your childs program for the individualized instruction they are entiltled to and help you assess if your child is recieving an appropriate education. Knowledge is power and this book will empower you!

An excellent primer on drafting IEPs,
By Staraforo (Charlottesville, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Better IEPs : How to Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs (Paperback)
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any parent who has a child in special education. If you are looking for a book to understand and even draft IEPs, this is debatably the best, clearest book out there.Reviewing and drafting IEPs can be very daunting. This book helps the reader (whether parent, school official, or legal professional) understand the IEP process. After reading this book, any parent will be able to better understand their child's IEP and even be able to write them.

great information,

This is a great reference source for teachers who write IEPs. My professor actually recommended this book. I am earning my graduate degree in Special Education after earning my undergraduate in Business Education so obviously it is a much needed resource for me personally. I find it to be well worth the money.

This book is a pretty good first resource. If you already own Wrightslaw Special Education Law, then you don't need this book.
In addition, some of the advice in this book is based on legal precedent created before the 2004 revision of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In other words, some of the advice in the book may be incorrect.

Not the best on the market,

This review is from: Better IEPs How to Develop Legally Correct and Educationally Useful Programs (Paperback)
I've bought oh, maybe ten books on this subject while going through the IEP process for the THIRD time for my autistic son. I found it to be dated, based a lot on opinion and it's format did not make it as easy to navigate as other books that contain more easily found and pertinent information. I do not recommend it as your first or only buy on the subject.

The book is clear, concise, with good summaries at the end of the chapters. The legal emphasis that the author placed to makelegaly compliant IEP is very useful for Special Education teacher or general public interested in the topic.

This book is a great resource for writing IEP's. It clearly goes over what is expected to go in each section. Unfortunately, I bought it for a class and later the teacher decided we did not need the book. I decided to keep the book for myself as a resource for the future.

This book was a required textbook for a graduate-level special education course. We used the book heavily and it was fine. The book arrived in time for the first day of class.
