5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite CD September 20, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album a few weeks ago after hearing Calvin Gilmore sing How Amazing Grace Can Be on the Grand Ole Opry. The song stuck in my head and finally I looked him up on Amazon.com and he was there. I bought the CD and absolutely love it! Every song is so wholesome. If you're into the new "bubble gum" country, this CD probably isn't for you. It has a little more of the traditional country sound. He has a couple of cover songs on it too and gives Eddy Raven a run for his money on Island. I give this CD 2 thumbs up.

Prime Cuts: Waltz in a Soft Texas Rain, How Amazing Grace Can Be, Island

As far as excellence goes, "Better Late" scrapes the stratosphere. Abounding in magical moments that luxuriates the heart with vivid and heartfelt memories, this record is the perfect combination of well-written melodies and Gilmore's sturdy tenor. Never overpowering or lacking in verve, this is CD is rustic in execution yet not devoid the modern sensibilities of today's country. Such a masterpiece, needless to say, can only come because of the masterminding of veteran producer Barry Beckett. For the uninitiated, Beckett's name as producer has graced the sleeves of albums such as Lorrie Morgan's "Leave the Light On," Kenny Chesney's "In My Wildest Dreams," Tanya Tucker's "Tanya," Alabama's "Southern Star" among others.

For starters, four of the tracks here are covers, though they are not ostensibly overdone tunes. Perhaps the most recognizable re-make is Merle Haggard's "Farmer's Daughter." Here Gilmore has brought in the Hag to trade on some lines here and here, with its production kept more or less abreast to the original. Honestly, it is the album's least interesting track; much more riveting is Eddy Raven's "Island." With its calypso and gentle congo-like drums, "Island" gently sways with an amorous zest that is refreshing as well as captivating. "That Ole Gravel Road," on the other hand, first appeared on Pearl River's Capitol CD from the early 90s. The jaunty melodic line and clipped electric guitar riffs of "That Ole Gravel Road" shows us that Gilmore can work a country-rock tune with the hippest of today's country when he wants to. The final cover is Don Williams' "Lovin' You is Like Coming Home," a homely mid-tempo that grooves along with some lilting piano and fiddle lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD July 24, 2006
Format:Audio CD
All of the songs on this CD are really good. I first heard Calvin Gilmore's music a couple weeks ago on KJEL 103.7 radio in Lebanon MO so i bought the CD. No disappointments here. He has two songs that are cover songs, but the rest are original. They're all great. My favorite is Waltz in a Soft Texas Rain.
