Good Idea...,
By RinaLysee (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Better Late Than Never (The Smith Sister's Trilogy - Book 1) (Paperback)
I was really excited to read this book. The synopsis had me highly interested. The idea was very good. However, once I started reading a majority of things started to bother me. First, the amount of grammar and error mistakes was far too distracting. It became so bad that instead of reading the text I started looking for misspelled words and mistakes. It was as if I was reading the beginning stages of a story as opposed to completed work.
Second, there was hardly any conflict/resolution in the story. Randy and Kristen's beginning relationship dilemma was resolved too quickly. There was not enough conflict after that. Also, once the two became physical Kristen's reluctance to officially get back with Randy was unbelievable. It would have been nice to see them struggling more before getting together. Last, there were noticeable inconsistencies. Like in one chapter Kristen recalled knowing about Randy's son Wade 6 years prior. This makes no sense considering Wade is only three years old. As I read I felt as if I had to excuse mistakes or fill in uncertainties that should have been edited out. The story is not bad. I just feel like it is incomplete. The story was a good idea, but the execution was poor.

I really had high hopes for this book. However, after reading the first 10 pages of this story, I knew that I had wasted my money. The characters are flat and one dimensional. The plot is rushed and the pacing of this book is horrible. I hate to start a book and not finish it, but I actually threw this one away after forcing myself to read the 1st half. I love interracial novels, but I'm so disappointed that I wasted my money on this one!

The concept of triplets on top of BWWM relationship intrigued me...but this one fell far short of expectations. It never developed. This story could've benefitted from a good editor, who could've corrected gramatical erros, cut pointless text (how many times does Kristen 'go upstairs, take a shower, and go to bed grasping her teddy bear')? The story had no real development of plot, no umph, no real conflict despite potential (Triplets causing confusion in the who's who department would've been fun, and the ex-woman called towards the end to start trouble, but was never even brought on site). Why bother? And after 127 pages (at least in my size book... I didnt' realize it was so short) the only resolution was that they would try to move forward in their relationship, expecting to marry one day.
This seems like a draft of a book, a concept that needs much work. Would not recommend this effort... needs more work.

On Time Tonight,
By Jericho Sutton Palmer "Chocolate Lover" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Better Late Than Never (The Smith Sister's Trilogy - Book 1) (Paperback)
I haven't been able to get to this book all week. But I finally sat down and finished it tonight. Morris was on time with this one. Sex is not at the top of my list as I said before but if you want a sexy erotic novel to enjoy with sensible and clever characters, I'd recommend this book. I like easy reads mostly because as a fireman I don't like heavy but also because it's just easier to digest. I was recently put on to this author and I think she's in my top three. I'm still waiting on Nelson's third book of her crime family series and now I've converted over to this author while I wait. Overall Morris gets two thumbs and a big smile for this one.

The book was a true page turner! I really enjoyed reading the book and seeing the romance unfold bit by bit. I was so into the book that I could not put the book down. It was a great read in my opinion....true romance! Also, it does not hurt when the man is beautiful too!!! What a good read!!!!
Highly recommend the book to anyone that would enjoy a love romance book! Beware, it will keep you up all night reading it though!!! Truly worth every minute!!!!! Enjoyed every page of the book!!!

The story line was okay, but I got confused a lot when the story would jump from one part to another part; it didn't have a continuous feel to it. For example, in the beginning of the story Kristen is mad at Randy and the next chapter says she is having dinner with him at his parents house. How did this happen, when did he ask her, and how did he convince her to go? I swear I went back over the story to see if I missed Randy asking Kristen to dinner at his parents. Don't worry I didn't. And that was a big mistake on the authors part especially when the story line is all about her pain of their break up. There should have been more to that part of the story. Other than that I really liked the characters and the plot, I just wish the author would have did more with it.

I was disappointed with this read. I think the storyline was a really good idea but it feels more like a story outline than a fully developed novel. Like some of the other reviewers I was somewhat distracted by the spelling and grammatical errors. I felt that the characters were not very well developed. The limited tension in the story appeared contrived and did not flow naturally. The story and the characters were one dimensional. There was little two really draw you to any character and make you fall in love with them. There are also quite a few inconsistencies in the book - some obvious ones and some not so obvious ones, like what feels like Kristen's overreaction to simple situations. Or her inconsistent logic - but I can't go into too mush detail without spoiling some of the story.
I believe the idea showed potential but the author was not well served by her editors. While billed as a multiracial story there was nothing in the story that really brought that out - it was pretty irrelevant to the plot, which may be a good thing - except that if it is irrelevant to the storyline don't mention it. I will say this the author can write a good love scene. There are quite a few of them and they were pretty good. Also she set up a series quite well - the ground work was nicely laid. I believe this may be her first published work and I would not write her off, she shows promise. With a better editor, an open mind and a willingness to do a little more she could be quite good.

Who is that guy on the cover? He's the same person on The Blacker the Berry by Lena Matthews. He's so fine. It looks like the same picture too. photoshopped????

Let me start off by saying I was scared to death to read this book after reading the two prior reviews! Especially because I had already purchased my book. However I'm glad I did! If I had read the reviews first I wouldn't have given this book the valid chance it deserves. After reading the horrible reviews these two readers left I went and did some more research on the book. I actually found the writer had 5 very nice reviews by reputable book review sites. So I felt much better! I also agreed with those reviews over the two here. This truly was a good book! One-dimensional characters? I think not. Kristen and Randy were two characters with a very believable story of losing the person you really care about and having the chance to get that person back, along with the struggle it comes with. Anyone who has experienced that or wanted to can relate to this story. Kristen and Randy are two characters every reader can relate to on some level. It is an emotional read so have your Kleenex ready. I like the realism of the problems between both Randy and Kristen and how they struggle to overcome their difficulties. I also liked supporting characters brought spice to this story, and had me hoping to see them again in the near future (which there will be by the way because this is a trilogy). I won't even mention the love scenes except to say that Kristen and Randy burn up the sheets with a intimacy so heartfelt and touching that I couldn't stop reading. I even went back and read a few of those scenes twice. I really enjoyed this book. If you are a romance book reader you will like this book. The plot of this story was well thought out and written. I will end this by saying I enjoyed the bear because it had a very sentimental meaning behind it. I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil it. But you will get why it was so dear to her at the end of the book. If you are a true romance novel fan you have a delightful read ahead of you. Oh if you think the print copy is too expensive this book is also in ebook format. I look forward to reading the books about the other two sisters! This author is definitely one I will follow. |
