Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Like the popular Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?, this winsome picture book features the exuberant and lovable Jesse, whose curiosity this time leads him to water. Throughout the day Jesse's parents try to keep him dry as he dabbles in the aquarium, waters the flowers and plays in the birdbath, but finally they let him splash about in his own pool: "Boating, floating, hey hey/ Getting wet is okay/ Hooray! Hooray!" Each incident is accompanied by Jesse's chanting and by a cartoon caption that cautions, "Better not get wet, Jesse Bear." Degen's clever watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings are full of surprisesas when the somber portrait of a bonneted relative hanging on the wall reacts in the next picture to Jesse's aquarium mess. The lilting, strongly rhymed text and the warm, loving drawings are every bit as appealing as those in the first Jesse book. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 The hero of Carlstrom's earlier book, Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? (Macmillan, 1986) returns in a joyfully soggy, bouncily rhymed adventure. It's a lovely warm day, and Jesse is intrigued by water at every turnin the sink, in the fish tank, from the garden hose, and so on. But each foray into the water is met by the same response from ever-smiling mama and somewhat bemused papa: ``Better not get wet, Jesse Bear.'' With each repetition of the phrase, Jesse moves toward his next target until his parents finally fill his wading pool and let him splash away to his heart's content. The bright, sun-washed line and watercolor illustrations abound with whimsical details, and there is much to discover in each panel. The strong repetition of key phrases will make this a natural favorite with the preschool set, and may even lend itself to a chant-along recitation. Readers and listeners alike will be awash with laughter and drenched with delight. Kathleen Brachmann, Highland Park Public Library, Ill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Not Get Wet, Jesse Bear, March 30, 2000
This review is from: Better Not Get Wet, Jesse Bear (Paperback)
This is the second book we've read in the Jesse Bear Series, and we love it as much as the first one, "What Will You Wear Jesse Bear?" We plan to buy the rest. The illustrations are wonderful and hold my two year olds attention as he soaks up all details. He loves the little bear and his parents. The rhyming style is very catchy and has enough repetition to keep a toddler involved. The book shows a typical toddler (who happens to be a bear) trying his best to get wet in all sorts of daily activities. He is continually thwarted by the warning "Better not get wet Jesse Bear!" until his parent bears finally let him loose in his own pool. My son LOVES to say that line as it is repeated throughout the story and yell "SPLASH" when Jesse Bear gets to jump into his pool. Surprisingly, the book made the sublte point to my son about puddles and such. When he runs across them now, he shakes his head and says "better not wet, Jesse Bear"

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and Beautifully Illustrated !!!, January 31, 2012

These books by this author are amazing with beautiful, delightful illustrations. And finally a book that shows a mother AND a father in a loving family. The mother also appears to be a stay at home mother which is so refreshing!! I get annoyed with so many books that show the most influential person in a child's life as a teacher. Nothing against teachers but parents are the primary person in a child's life or are supposed to be anyway. Love, love, love these books and so does my three year old.

I ordered this book used, but in good shape it said, it was missing a page, no big deal if the seller would return my emails and help me replace the book. I have emailed 3 times and received nothing, so I am very dissatisfied with the product and service.
