4.0 out of 5 stars Short, Simple, and Enjoyable
Overflow's "A Better Place" isn't the most original music you will ever hear. This release probably isn't going to blow you away, but its still pretty decent. The music and lyrics focus on God, but both are simple and to the point, and most of the songs are pretty short. Their style is your standard rock sound, for the most part above average.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Start
This is a good Christian pop rock album. The strength here is the sincerity of the music and a vocalist who can carry this group a long way. Think Goo Goo Dolls with a Christian message and you'll be in the Overflow ballpark. At three stars this is an enjoyable album and gives the band room to grow on.

Who says everything has to be ground breaking and complex to be enjoyable? There are still kool guitar riffs, pretty piano parts, and strings here and there which are nice. I personally would have liked to of heard a little more of that stuff, especially the piano. Injecting more of the piano player would have given them a more original sound. The sound of a singer's voice is very important to me, and Overflow's vocalist is enjoyable.

The highlights of the cd are Come Home, Cry On My Shoulder, Forever, and Just for Me. For those songs the cd is worth buying. I wouldn't pay 17 bucks for this like alot of Christian distributors charge, but then again I wouldn't pay that much for any cd. I'm interested to see what Overflow do with their talents in the future. A good debut release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overflow has high potential in the CMA!, August 31, 2004

I have been an Overflow fan for 4 years now. I met the guys in a little teen hangout...and let me tell you all...they are FAR FROM FAKE. I have no idea what these people who are giving bad reviews are talking about because they do not even know the guys! These guys are willing to help kids/teens/adults in anyway they can so they may become closer to Christ. Their music is very original, and their lyrics have touched the lives of others.

As one fan writes..."wow i thought that was a great concert all of them! that is really cool how yall did a christian concert at a water park going to chururces and stuff is great but going to a public water park where so so many people dont know a thing about God! and i just thought that was really cool whoever thought of that is very neat! but yall did a wonderful job! and thank you so much for comming to Arkansas!"-Caitlin from Arkansas.

If that doesnt sum up their love for God and their purpose, I dont know what does. If you want to listen to recycled lyrics and cliched music that has NO message, go listen to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Marilyn Manson. If you want to listen to something truly orininal and wonderful in lyrics and music and will Bless your life, ya got to get "Overflow-A Better Place"!!! How about open your eyes(all of you who gave bad reviews) and see the blessings that God gives to those who serve!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is full of hope., August 31, 2004
This review is from: A Better Place (Audio CD)
For the first 10 measures of this album, you might think it a rip-off of executive producer Mac Powell's Third Day. But then.....there's the rest of the album. If you think that Third Day is an ok band but tend to favor more good 'ole rock and roll, then this album is for you.

Overflow's sound guy is a good friend of mine and I have hung out with these guys on many occasions throughout the recording process. I can tell you that this album is definitely their own, written by the five guys on the cd.....and not thier producers.

With rockin' tracks such Better Place, What's Missing, and Gotta Believe It (which is reminiscent of old school Third Eye Blind); this cd is a good addition to any rock library.

The lyrics aren't as clever as Radiohead or Project 86, but then again, the cover says Overflow and not Radiohead. Ballads such as Come Home, Cry on My Shoulder, and Forever are good sunday morning classics.

Listen, the buzz out of Essential Records is that they think that Overflow has alot of success in front of them. And it can't hurt that Christian music's biggest figure Mac Powell is quoted saying that he thinks that Overflow is on their way to even more success than his own band Third Day. The album is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Worship Than Praise, May 3, 2005
This review is from: A Better Place (Audio CD)
Like my title suggests, this CD has a few more worship-style songs than praise hooks, but a very worthy listen regardless! I think "Cry On My Shoulder" should be required listening by anyone that has ever been letdown or disappointed by anything. A great song that really puts this young band on the Christian music map!!

For the record, I wish they paid me to do reviews, but I own a production company that does the SHOUTFEST Tour every year. So if you really want to know what they sound like. Go to www.shoutfest.com and buy tickets to the closest site near you and listen to them and make up your own mind.

And yes they are friends of mine, and yes I might be a bit biased but...... Dont take anyones word for it, go to a show and listen to them, go to www.ofrocks.com and listen to the soundbites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a rest ...., June 13, 2005

Even though I'm an aging rock n roller, I still find a lot of new Christian groups worth a listen, and will support their efforts by keeping my teenage kids tuned in. Of course, we could always promote the garbage that spews out of the secular world ... after all, it is very original and expressive, but I'll pass on the message of the music, thank you.

When a group like Overflow emerges, they deserve a chance. These guys relate God's love to kids (and old rock n rollers) with simple but important messages, and have a great sound to carry it along. Crank it up and you'll see.

I bought this CD because I take it at face value...it's a good listen. And yep, I'm a Third Day kind of guy so I may be biased. And nope, I'm not being paid by Overflow to promote. I heard some of their music on Christian radio, liked what I heard, my kids liked it, so we bought it. That's how it works folks.

That's the best word I can think of to describe it. The guys did a great job with this cd. I love this cd. And, they are not paying me to say that! It would be nice, though, if they would. :p Hee Hee Seriously, they're nice guys. This cd deserves everyone's attention. I've had it since the day it came out, and I'm still not sick of it. (:

Ok people!! This is one of the Best CD's I have ever bought! and no I am not someone who writes "phony reviews" (which I don't believe that anyone who wrote on here wrote a phony review) this is coming from the heart! When I've had a bad day I go in my room and blast Overflow (while singing and dancing) its always makes me feel better, the words in the songs actully mean something! The words aren't nonsence that you can't understand, they actully make you feel.... when I listen to "Come Home" it makes me want to cry, when I listen to "Don't Run Away" its like they know what I'm going through. All of the guys would always be happy to talk to you if you ever have a problem, and they ARE NOT phony people with no talent. They are the best band I've ever heard and, I don't know why you are saying all of that stuff about not being creative, because on their CD it says "words by OVERFLOW and Scotty Wilbanks" not just Scotty Wilbanks!! just give them a listen and you'll fall in love with their music just as I did!

Betsy

P.S. here are so lyrics, "Come here and cry on my shoulder, I'll hold you 'til its over, I'll rescue you tonight, Let my arms be your shelter, your hiding place forever, I'll love you more than life."

If that doesn't touch your heart... I don't know what can!
