This book by Jay Smith has been brought back into print by Bush Farms and it is a must for any beekeeper wanting to learn about rearing quality honeybee queens without a lot of specialty equipment. The best feature of this book is the summary which Michael Bush has boiled down into an almost checklist-like guide to queen rearing. The process is outlined not only for commercial breeders but also for the backyard beekeeper who needs only a few queens. This one will stay in your library.

An easy method of raising queens without the need for grafting tools, or extremely good eyesight.

As an amateur backyard beekeeper, I hadn't considered raising my own queens [on purpose, the bees have other ideas].

This method is simple, and requires no special tools. Queen rearing is something that I am no longer intimidated by, and am now emboldened to try on my own.

Cheers,
Tony P.

Recently got this and found it to bee full of helpful info based on experience and not theory. I especially likes the way the author looks at things from the bees perspective. It all makes perfect sense. will recommend this to any one interested in bees.

I was impressed at how easy jay makes it seem to breed queens...
There's a lot of great info packed in this lil book..
And he had a lot of great stories through the book too..
So the review at the end came in handy :-)
My only complaint is it could use better photos..
Its definitely a must have for any beekeepers book collection.

This book highlights & advocates the "Notching" method for queen rearing as a it produces superior queens to the more common grafting method. I have to say my experience confirms notching does, in fact yield a better quality queen. Nearly every grafted queen I've installed (from various suppliers) has been superseded in short order. Notching mimics the supersedure that the bees will naturally do.

The book is written in a "plain spoken" first person manner that is enjoyable to read.

I understand the grainy old pictures are there for authenticity. But it'd sure be nice to have new crystal clear pictures to help understand some of the information covered. Hopefully they'll consider this for a future "Revised/Updated" edition?

This is a fast read and Jay Smith writes like he's having a conversation with you. There are lots of practical ideas with a full description of how to raise queens commercially and another chapter on how to simplify the process if you just want a few queens each year.

Ideally suited to the DIY beekeeper. Would make a great gift.

A reprint from 1949 that is let down by poor reproductions of the photos. Diagrams to show features would have been useful. With better photo &/or diagrams I would have given it 4 stars.

Very dated, this is not a NEW book recently written. It does have a lot of good information, and is an excellent read, so long as you are not after the latest techniques.
