Editorial Reviews

Review

“Chronic Lyme disease affects millions, yet few doctors know how to diagnose or treat it, and few get better… Dr. Richard Horowitz provides the first comprehensive explanation of why, and thankfully provides a roadmap to wellness by addressing the root causes of this debilitating illness. His approach reflects the future of health care. Medicine would be much better if all doctors understood and treated illness like Dr. Horowitz. If you have suffered from unexplained, chronic or hard-to-treat illness, this book is your pathway to health.” ―Mark Hyman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Blood Sugar Solution

“Dr. Richard Horowitz brought [my family] back from the brink of Lyme disease hell to true health. In Why Can't I Get Better, Horowitz discusses...chronic disease and the cascade of problems that may start with infection but ultimately go far beyond it... His provocative insights apply to chronic illness writ large.” ―Pamela Weintraub, award-winning author of Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic

“Dr. Horowitz has been, and continues to be, ‘in the trenches' in the battle to understand, diagnose and treat people who, like myself, have suffered or are suffering the effects of Lyme... I can think of no one more qualified to write about this subject.” ―Daryl Hall, musician (Hall & Oates)

“This synopsis not only provides a treasure trove of information about Lyme disease to patients and health care providers, it also offers a glimmer of hope for anyone suffering from chronic illness.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Well-researched, information-rich content... the book offers matter-of-fact, objective narration” ―Library Journal

“Horowitz is one of the most prominent ‘Lyme literate' physicians…patients wait for months to see him, and several told me that he had essentially cured them of a disease that nobody else seemed able to treat.” ―The New Yorker

Lyme disease and its related conditions are incredibly complicated. Different patients can have completely different sets of symptoms. And treatments that work for some patients might not help others at all.

Through his years of working with more than 12,000 Lyme disease patients—many of whom had been sick for years and had failed many treatments before they even came to see him—Dr. Richard Horowitz has developed a new way of looking at the complex factors that embody this disease.

He doesn’t even call it “chronic Lyme.” Instead, he calls it “Lyme and MSIDS (multi-systemic infectious disease syndrome). Which is another way of saying that Lyme is only part of the picture.

Instead of looking for one answer to what is wrong with the patient, Horowitz says, doctors should be looking for many factors. Because, especially after someone has been sick a long time, there are usually a number of conditions contributing to their misery. He likens it to having 16 nails stuck in the bottom of your foot. Just pulling out one won’t fix your problem.

Thus, he has a “16-Point Differential Diagnostic Map” for evaluating chronically ill patients.

This is a brilliant book which elucidates the complexities of Lyme disease. Lyme disease is usually not just an infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Dr. Horowitz explains how every Lyme patient is different. Some mainly need treatment with antibiotics for Lyme and multiple coinfections, while others also need help with sleep, hormone replacement, diet, nutritional support, herbal treatments, detoxification, and mind body medicine. The book is full of stories about real people with varying Lyme disease symptoms and how they can get well. This book is a great resource for both patients and doctors. It presents an elegant 15-prong approach to helping people get well from this commonly misdiagnosed epidemic.

If you are suffering with chronic fatigue, body aches, complete disability, cognitive dysfunction or neurological symptoms, don’t lose hope! You are not alone, though multiple doctors may have told you they don’t know what is wrong with you and perhaps written an antidepressant prescription to make you “feel better”. Though it’s understandably depressing to be told by doctors they don’t know what is wrong with you, there are doctors trained in recognizing the infections Dr. Horowitz discusses in his book, Why Can’t I get Better? Solving the Mystery of Lyme and Chronic Disease.

This book will assist perhaps millions of chronically sick people in their quest for health as well as the physicians who want to learn from a colleague’s quest and discoveries in healing his sickest patients. Dr. Horowitz shares openly, humorously and successfully the politics, the science, and the medicine of treating individuals with chronic tick born infections and immune dysfunction.

What deeply impresses me about Dr. Horowitz is his candor about utilizing all modalities of healing to bring about the best outcomes for his patients. Trained in internal medicine, he realizes prescription medications are not always successful or indicated in healing his patients when they suffer from hormone imbalances, toxic foods, metals or nutritional deficiencies.

Learn how to navigate your path to wellness or help your patients overcome the illnesses that prevent them from living a completely healthy life by adopting the “medical detective” strategy to discover the causes of chronic disease in Dr. Horowitz’s book Why Can’t I Get Better?.
