5.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner, not to be missed.
Kay Thomas has crafted a book that not only makes you fall in love with her hero, Harlan for his tender care and understanding of an autistic boy, Adam, but has you rooting for Harlan and the heroine, Gina, Adam's aunt, as they solve the mystery behind the death of Adam's mother.

I enjoyed the book but there was just something lacking. Like one reviewer pointed out, there was no point in the book where either the hero or the heroine finding out that they loved each other and couldnt live without each other.

Better Than Bulletproof kept me turning pages as fast as I could and is the best Intrigue book I've read in years. Ms. Thomas sets the tone of the book from page one. Given the situation they are in, the seriousness of the problem, Adam's unusal needs, she lets the romance build naturally between Harlan and Gina.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Addictive, February 19, 2009

I was totally gripped by this story, it is interesting and innovative. Read this in one sitting, absolutely unable to put it down! The suspense is as well done, if not better than some of the things on the Times Best Seller list right now. I looked it up and she has another book coming out in April- I can't wait! I have already pre-ordered it!

This book is not only exciting and well-written, but it covers a topic that's rarely discussed in romance novels. Thumbs up on this debut novel by an author to watch.

Riviting may be an overused word in book reviews but for me this books was just that. A fast paced, suspensful, page turner that fit in with my of what an Intrigue should be. The connection between Gina and Harlan progressed logically but for me it was secondary to the intrigue of the story. They were crossed at every turn in their need to, and rush to, solve the mystery of what ,and who, was against their survival. The interaction between Harlan and Adam and Gina and Adam seemed realistic. Gina's concerns about her ability to care for Adam felt very real. Intense is the word I would use to describe the relationship side and the intrigue side of this story.

3.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it but..., January 8, 2012
I enjoyed the book but there was just something lacking. Like one reviewer pointed out, there was no point in the book where either the hero or the heroine finding out that they loved each other and couldnt live without each other. The closest thing that came to it was at the end when Gina said that he was enough. Ture, the story line about Harlen working with Adam with no background to help him is alittle far out there, but i can understand his need to help with what happened with the out come of his last tour in Iraq. Other than those flaws, the story was enjoyable with the different twists even when i figured out who was behind everything before the story was half over...Harlen knew something was up with his mentor at about the time i figured out at least part of the conclusion. But like i said, it was an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars for this supenseful story, July 11, 2009
This review is from: Better Than Bulletproof (Harlequin Intrigue) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first Harlequin Intrigue I have read and I have to say that I am impressed. The author Kay Thomas has written a fast paced action packed novel. The subject matter is controversial yet timely too.

Heroine Gina gets a very disturbing phone call from hero, Harlan Jeffries who is working with her autistic nephew, five year old Adam. He needs Gina's help because her sister has suddenly disappeared leaving Adam behind. Harlan, who is a former army officer, is a student at Mississippi State University and very worried because Gina's sister was working on a controversial study which could ruin the careers of several people and bring down an entire corporation. Once Gina arrives in Mississippi everything seems to go wrong. The two must work together to determine the whereabouts of Gina's sister but also they must protect Adam.

Ms. Thomas has certainly done her homework in autism. Adam acts in the typical manner of an autistic child and Gina and Harlan have to adapt to Adam's behaviors. Gina especially feels over her head in this realm as she has had a distant relationship with her nephew. These passages are particularly well written.

The romance is a little on the back burner but this was understandable as the two leads were on the run and fearing for their safety. The ending seemed abrupt, however this is a fine story with a superb hero who is alpha male but also wonderfully sensitive to a boy with very special needs. It was easy to love him.

1.0 out of 5 stars No romance here, no chemistry, no love, January 16, 2009
By
This review is from: Better Than Bulletproof (Harlequin Intrigue) (Mass Market Paperback)
What I love about Harlequin Intrigue books is that there is always romance first and then mystery. But with this book you get mystery and very very little romance. Gina the leading lady having self doubt and Harlan the leading man who was an ex-military guy and is now working with an autistic child, not buying it. The pieces just didn't connect for me. There was no smoldering looks, no jolting touches between Gina and Harlan. Not chemistry between Gina and Harlan. Why too much vaccine- pharmacy medical talk that was too confusing. And no "I love yous" at the end which is a must for these type of books. 4 thumbs down, skip this book.
