Book Description

November 2003
A recent survey found that two-thirds of Americans think George W. Bush is doing a great job running the country. "Yeah, well the other one-third read," says vigilante pundit Baratunde Thurston, who is offering that privileged third an opportunity to read his debut book: Better Than Crying: Poking Fun at Politics, the Press & Pop Culture.

If you are a fan of Al Franken, Michael Moore or just plain common sense, you will love this straight-from-the-hip critique which answers all the important questions. What really goes on inside the home of boy band, O-Town? When did Vice President Dick Cheney actually die? Why will John Ashcroft use pork plantations in the War on Terror? And how do you celebrate Black History Month if you’re not black?

Welcome to the voice of a new generation of political satire. This book is sure to tickle your funny bone and assault your belief system. Read it, before doing so becomes illegal!

From the Author

I believe this book will change your life, and if not, hey, it's only $8. You've spent a lot more than $8 on things that did absolutely NOTHING for your life, so come on, buy the book. Please... I'm hungry.

Thurston takes shots at everything from spam to foreign affairs to afro-touching. His humor is sharp, and smart. I spent most of my time with this book laughing out loud. Looking forward to more work from this guy...

4.0 out of 5 stars He's part of the one-third that can read., December 10, 2003
This review is from: Better Than Crying: Poking Fun at Politics, the Press & Pop Culture (Paperback)
Ok, I may be a bit biased in being one of Baratunde's comedy cohorts in the up and coming Boston comedy scene, but this book is absolutely a hilarious hoot in political and pop culture satire. If you are a fan of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, you'll love Baratunde's sharp yet playful style of humor aimed at boy bands, politicans, political debates, and technology. Although the format of the book is not traditional due to it's late night news format which may throw you off at times, it definitely keeps you on your toes with it's humor on many subjects. It HAS an edge to it as well, while not being too preachy on one side or the other. My personal favorite pieces are his frustration at white people's fascination with touching his afro and Newsphlash's "interviews" with the boy band, "O-Town" and USAG John Ashcroft. So if you are part of the one thrid, a this is a highly recommended book!
