Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- The 15-year-old author assembled these 51 ideas for kids to make money; numerous adults have done this before, but this guy is organized! Some of the projects require specialized knowledge and/or equipment (computer teacher and telephone-information-line organizer), others are add-ons to other services (garbage can mover, newspaper mover), and some are just plain selling (snack vendor, street flower vendor). Less than half are duplicated in other widely distributed books on the topic. For each business, Bernstein tells what supplies to obtain, how much time is involved, what to charge, how to advertise, and other helpful hints. The expressive cartoons are entertaining, but they don't show how to do anything. The style is concise, straightforward, and upbeat. Bonnie and Noel Drew's Kid Biz (Eakin, 1990 formerly known as Fast Cash for Kids ; Homeland, 1987), Wilkinson's Making Cents (Little, 1989), and Belliston and Hanks's Extra Cash for Kids (Wolgemuth & Hyatt, 1989) all have ideas that are just as creative, give more background information, and have more suggestions. Making Cents has more informative illustrations, but none have Bernstein's economical style or uniform categories of information that make it easy for readers to compare the requirements and rewards of each entrepreneurial idea. --Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Better Than A Lemonade Stand: Small Business Ideas For Kids (Kid's Books by Kids Series) (Paperback)
The author didn't really talk about everything..... In many states you need a food handler's permit to cook food to be consumed by other people, or even to serve it. Often you must cook it in a commercial kitchen. Most of these ideas wouldn't work, because you must have a great deal of talent or a very large amount of starting money, such as ideas like a store window painter, or a jewelry maker. Most people would rather hire professionals to actually get the work done, then to trust something to a kid. I'm 12 years old and I'm glad I did not buy this book at full price, but found it used at a thrift store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on kids business ideas, September 5, 2003

Tyler Warren (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Better Than A Lemonade Stand: Small Business Ideas For Kids (Kid's Books by Kids Series) (Paperback)
This book is full of great ideas that kids can really use to make money. For each business, there is information on what supplies you need, how much time it will take, how much to charge customers, how to advertise, plus Daryl give some special tips from his experiences.

Daryl was 15 years old when he wrote this, so he really knows what it's like for kids to start their own businesses. Right now I'm trying 2 of the ideas in the book, and I'm already making some money.

Once you read this book, you'll see why it's the most famous book about money-making ideas for kids. Daryl really tells you everything you need to know and motivates you to believe in yourself.

By A Customer
This review is from: Better Than A Lemonade Stand: Small Business Ideas For Kids (Kid's Books by Kids Series) (Paperback)
Teen entrepreneur Daryl Bernstein gives the lowdown on over 50 nifty businesses that kids can start. He's come up with products and services that are truly useful -- and marketable. In addition to more traditional leaf raking and snow shoveling ideas, there's birthday party planner, comparison price shopper, photograph organizer, and lots more. Included are details on what supplies kids will need to run each business, what to charge, how to advertise, and special hints to make the venture a success.
