5.0 out of 5 stars I bought this for fruit smoothies and it is excellent!
I use my vitamix blender and have a soymilk, banana, strawberry, flaxseed meal, and ice smoothie every morning made with this powder and I LOVE it! I've also made other smoothies with this powder and they were all yummy! :o)

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor - maybe alright for baking
This is a poor replacement for the shelf stable, aseptically packaged soy milk we buy at the supermarket. The mix does not dissolve into water, you just get particles in suspension. After contacting the company, I will post pictures. I thought the flavor was fine, but my wife disagreed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious!, February 16, 2008
I used this product some years ago from Hannaford Grocery in North Carolina, until we moved away, I could no longer find it and forgot its name. Imagine my delight when it came up on an Amazon search. Better Than Milk is just as delicious as I remember. The benefit of the canister lies in the ability to use more or less when mixing to taste. No spoilage or waste. The product will settle after preparation, which may look unappealing, just give it a good shake before serving. (All commercially prepared soymilks recommend "Shake before serving", no difference here.) I find it mixable enough by hand for single serving or shaking in a quart container, I don't mind the lumps. However, some may prefer smoothness from a blender. It is recommended served chilled, however, I drink it immediately after mixing and it tastes fine to me. I mix it directly with cereal and water, in a glass for a single serving with water, also in a quart container for the refrigerator. The chocolate mix makes wonderful shakes. I have tried the rice mix, I prefer the soy. When I buy commercially prepared soymilk, either I don't have enough, or when I buy more to compensate for not having enough, it feels like a race to consume it before it may spoil, that is why I enjoy the canister of powder which lets me make as much as I need. I highly recommend Better Than Milk.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's "okay", but not as good as the premixed kind, February 9, 2008
By
Chuck (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
I've been drinking soy milk for a few years now. Up until now I always purchased the "premixed" type, either refrigerated or in the aseptic cartons. The primary reason I wanted to try a soy milk mix is to reduce the waste of all those cartons. (Even though I take them to the recycling center, it still seems like a waste.) A secondary reason was to reduce cost. "Better Than Milk" is the first mix I've tried. It's "okay", but it has a watery consistency, whereas premixed soy milk has the consistency of whole milk. Also, in my opinion the flavor isn't as good as that of premixed soy milk. I haven't experienced the mixing problems other reviewers mentioned because I use a small blender to mix it. I just mix what I need as I need it. The reason I haven't mixed a large quantity to keep in the refrigerator is I think the mix would probably "separate" while sitting in the refrigerator - but I haven't actually tried it yet. I'll finish this canister of mix, but I'm not sure I'll buy it again. I'm still looking for another mix to try. If anyone knows of a way to make the mix so it has a consistency more like milk, I'd like to hear it. Thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Convenient and economical, but tricky to mix, November 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Pros: Less packaging and weight, don't have to shop so often, I like the flavor on cereal, works well for baking and other cooking needs.

Cons: You might not like the flavor; I wish they didn't add flavorings or sweeteners but just let it be soy. It may well look like it will never mix up with water if you try the usual methods of whisking or blending. Actually mixes well with a little elbow grease and patience if you put it in a clear or translucent sealable container (I use a 1-qt. bottle with twist-on lid), and shake it upside down and all around like you're a disco queen (woo-hoo!), watching to get all the powder dissolved. Plus as others have noted, it won't stay blended, and in the clear/translucent container the settled-out layers kinda look gross in the fridge. Shake it lightly each time before use. Not so good in coffee or tea, because of the settling-out factor. Leaves a lightly gluey residue in the cereal bowl.

I haven't tried it for smoothies. Sometimes on my cereal I just put the powder on top of the cereal, run water over all, and mix it with my spoon--but I like "mushy" things. The somewhat gummy effect of the "easy" way probably won't appeal to many.

It works for me!

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not dissolve, even in a blender!, June 11, 2007
After using the original mix (which was good) I ordered some more. However, Amazon was out of the original mix, so I went with the low-fat, light mix.

My result hasn't even been as good as the other reviewer's picture...it might eventually sink to the bottom, but if I mix up a container of this milk, within 10 minutes I have one jug of yellow water with a layer of foamy creme-coloredness on top. I finally had to stop using it and use it only as a supplement when cooking.

DO NOT BUY THIS, unless you are a science teacher wanting to demonstrate suspension to your students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, December 25, 2006

I use Better Than Milk Light every day with Ezekiel 4:9 cereal. For liquid I use grapefruit juice. The soy powder mixes well with a little stirring with a spoon. I love the taste as the juice gives it a tang. The amount of powder used can be adjusted to taste and calcium need. Dieting caused me to lose much calcium from my bones and teeth. Better Than Milk Light helped me put the calcium back. Got a great dental report! Light has more calcium than the Original.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good powdered soy milk, April 29, 2008

I have used this product numerous time in the last several years. It is an inexpensive way to drink soy milk. Moreover, I use it for cooking and baking. My only issue with it is that it is a bit sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty Stuff!, April 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I used to mix dry milk powder into my cup of hot tea but I knew I needed to cut my dairy intake way down and then when I read that milk negates the effects of the tea's antioxidants I decided to switch to soy milk powder. The soy milk has more calories, more carbs, and less protein and calcium than the instant cow's milk. But then again the soy milk has fiber and the cow's milk does not. Also I just think that anything plant derived is better for us than anything animal derived. This soy milk powder is very tasty but does not mix easily even in hot liquids so I had to buy a mini-mixer Norpro Cordless Mini Mixer. Even though this soy milk powder is classified as Original (not vanilla) still it has a tiny bit of sweetness but not too much and if you think about it, powdered cow's milk is inherently sweet too. The directions say to use two tablespoons per eight ounces of water but you really need to use more, like twice that much, to get a good creamy beverage. I'm glad I bought it and will continue to buy and enjoy it. Update - now that I've been using it for several weeks I've come to realize that it actually will dissolve in hot and cold liquids with just a bit of stirring, no need to use the mini mixer. Another update - yummy mixed with V8 or other vegetable juice. This makes for an excellent mid afternoon snack since it delivers both protein and a serving of vegetables in a delicious cold drink. One serving and I can head out for a five mile walk totally fueled and still not hungry when I get home. Looking forward to trying in grapefruit juice as recommended by another reviewer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, October 14, 2009

This review is from: Better Than Milk Vegan Beverage Mix, Soy, Light, 21.4-Ounce Canisters (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
I've been using this product for about a year and at this point I don't know what I'd do without it. I use it to make a soy shake in the mornings to take my supplements. The shake keeps me full and satisfied for most of the day. I've also used it in my coffee and I think it has a very nice flavor - IF you like the taste of soy.

As far as difficulty mixing, it's not difficult. Just use a tiny whisk, no problems there. After reading other reviews and complaints about this product I really feel that some people just love to complain. Bottom line, this is not cows milk so it's different...

I hope that the manufacturer reads these reviews and comes out with a non-sweetened version. I'd buy it.
