When we build walls to protect ourselves we arbitrarily lock ourselves in and lock others out . In the meantime, life goes on and we play "the hand that is dealt". Better Than None is a mesmerizing tale. It grips , commands our full attention and leads us into moments of reflection. This story is a journey of life and death; of love and forgiveness. It affirms that "unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it will not grow." We are stronger than we know. This is the story of our lives told through the person of Stephanie Lawson, a 37 year old professional, who attempts to become someone other than what her past defines her as. When her mother is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she becomes acquainted with the adage you can run but you cannot hide (from life experiences).Until faced with the mortality of her best friend and mother, Steph had not faced her own frailties. Better Than None reminds us that we all have a story and we can be certain our own is not an exclusive - for that which we have not lived we can still empathise and learn from. This book is said to be different from the author's previous books, but it is still undeniably Olivia Jake. She has taken her personal experience of loss and transcribed it into a conduit of hope, encouragement and understanding that leads to forgiveness. She shows us that death is not just an end but a beginning as well. This is an unforgettable story. I highly recommend it to book lovers of every genre' and to every person who seeks understanding of his fellow man.

Having read other works by Jake and found them totally engaging, I was thrilled to see another title out by her so soon. I read this in literally one sitting and have to say, while it's different from her previous works--it was a captivating read! Definitely more emotional than I expected, Better Than None tackles some real life issues in a way that's so honest you almost forget it's fiction. The relationship between mother and daughter is so real, and the journey they go on together is utterly compelling. To me this was a love story on many levels, with just enough romance to keep me turning the pages. Waiting patiently for the next Jake release!

Olivia Jake, the romance writer, has written a love story. Fear not old fans of Jake, there is still plenty of sex and humor that are the hallmarks of Ms. Jake's previous books. However, the emotional pain the writer has felt over the loss of her own mother is beautifully captured in Better than None. While one typically comes to an Olivia Jake book looking for delicious sex, they will leave this book having had a great cry, a great time and an understanding of the deep love that can only be reserved for a mother.

This is my first from this author and I enjoyed it very much. I liked that the characters were older and mature, but still steamy and with enough substance to make a great story. I was a little confused as to what brought oh the Stephanie's change. What happened that she was starting at a new place and that made her change her interactions with men? Other then that the story was touching and the emotions dealing with caring for a parent were realistic. Pick this one up today!

Better Than None is a love story. Relationships have many facets and Olivia Jake has done a fantastic job conveying the emotional experience of family love and the possibilities and excitement of romantic love. I found myself so caught up in the story that I read it in one sitting all the while enjoying the emotional peaks and valleys. I think anyone with the relationship that Steph and Barb had would agree that something is always better than none.

Another great read. You're emotionally there with an author who has mastered the perfect blend of personal experience with a story so heartwarmingly real anyone can relate. You can't help but feel like every character is someone you care about even when their flaws are on full display. Only a talented writer can pull this off. Thank you for this escape.
