5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Anyone (bodybuilder or not) who is interested in how do build lean mass and lose fat should have this book in their library. I am so tired of negative "reviews" that state the book has "nothing new" or its information can be found for "free on the Internet". He could have even made it shorter. Anyways, the book is not for pros or people who already in the BB forums, it gives bigenners the basic grounds to start bodybuilding (so no need to buy his fomer book because this one covers it and more). Anyone (bodybuilder or not) who is interested in how do build lean mass and lose fat should have this book in their library. I am so tired of negative "reviews" that state the book has "nothing new" or its information can be found for "free on the Internet". Obviously the same can be said for almost any book-- almost anything can be found on the Internet (even copyrighted material!). However, that requires finding the material, filtering out all of the conflicting information and judging whether to trust the source of the information found on the Internet. The whole point of buying a book, any book, is that the material is edited, presented in a clear, logical fashion, is supported by citations or research, and is written by an authority. This book gets 5 stars in all those respects!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whether you are a successful bodybuilder or amateur this book will benefit you!!!!!!!!!!!!!, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Better Than Steroids (Paperback)
"Better Than Steroids" really unlocks the secrets to using FOOD as a drug. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to change their body, no matter what their goals may be. I have been using Dr. Willey's concepts with my personal training clients as well as myself for a few years. I have helped guide over 100+ people using the ideas and concepts in "Better Than Steroids" and have had nothing but success.
I am an accomplished amateur bodybuilder for 5 years now and Dr. Willey has guided my training and has taken eating to a whole new level. Drug free bodybuilding demands proper eating, whether you are bulking up or leaning down, and Dr. Willey has unmasked these secretes for the first time in any book.
Overall this is an easy read and touches on many subjects from water intake, different lifting programs as well as a vast variety of eating secrets that with a little dedication can change the body, mind and overall life of ANYONE.

I give it an A+.

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers the most important part of building a great body - Nutrition., January 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Better Than Steroids (Paperback)
I love this book because it covers the key to a great body, nutrition.
It concentrates more on nutrition than it does on weight training and cardio. I love that.

The only reason I gave this book a 4/5 is because the actual plans were a bit confusing.
Dr.Warren Willey gives you an exact blueprint to attacking your goal, whatever it may be.

Want to lose fat and maintain muscle? He's got a plan for that.
Want to build muscle and maintain fat? He's got a plan for that
Want to build muscle and even lose a bit of fat in the process? It's in there too.

It just takes a bit of work to construct your plan and figure out exactly what you
need to do, day to day. I think it could have been layed out and worded better.
But that doesn't take away from the great information that is in this book. It's wonderful
and I recommend anyone who wants to learn how to eat picks up a copy.

Remember... Eating is the most important piece to the fitness puzzle. Learn how to eat to achieve
the results you want.

For people that do not know where to start or how to google, this book is for you. BUT do not depend entirly on this basic info, spend some time online searching, especially on workout plans because he did not cover them in a consistent way.

Am not saying I didn't learn anything from it, I actually found Chapter 9 to be a great topic and I got quit good info from it.

am taking out 2 star for the high price :)

I look forward to see more books from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward Review of BTS, February 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Better Than Steroids (Paperback)
The author's point seems to be that following the nutritional advice he gives without taking steroids is better than taking steroids while hardly paying attention to what you eat at all. My opinion on that is that he's possibly right.

Basically, what I think the reader should take from this book is that you can use calories FOR you--you have to eat all 3 macronutrients anyway to build muscle, so you might as well make the most of them. He discusses nutrient timing and what Arnold Schwarzenegger calls "creating demand". After you do a really hard workout, your muscles are in demand of protein, and they're also in need of carbohydrates to replace the carb stores in the muscles (glycogen).

It makes sense that if you eat quality protein shortly after a hard workout, and also an adequate amount of carbohydrates, a great deal of these calories are going to go to muscle anabolism and recovery, and NOT SO MUCH TO BE STORED AS BODY FAT. He doesn't advocate eating an excess of calories, though, as there are only so many your body can use for "productive" purposes.

Like any book, he makes a lot of points that I highly disagree with, but for me, ovrerall, this book was worth reading because of the helpful points he makes, and also because of the topics he discusses that further support and explain what modern experts and reliable/credible readings say about building muscle.

Lastly, I want to mention that specifically, what he says about insulin was very beneficial to me - it can be your best friend (assisting muscle-building) or your worst enemy (assisting the body's natural tendency to want to store calories as fat).

I highly recommend reading this book and determining what parts of it might be helpful to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Better Than Steroids (Paperback)
This is in fact one of the best I have read. Not only that the Dr. also put his personal email in the book. I emailed him a couple of times concerning a few things in the book and he replied in a very timely manner. The book plus the Dr's personal help made this book very invaluable. I am following some of the dieting guides in this book as we speak with great results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Steroids, February 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Better Than Steroids (Paperback)
Better than Steroids is a great book for anyone interested in bodybuilding. I have been training for 3 years now and I thought I knew what I was doing until I read this book. He keeps everything as simple as possible while giving you exact formulas for building muscle. I have only been training according to his book for a month now and have already lost 8 lbs of fat and gained 8 lbs of muscle and this is only the beginning. I am still learning and there are several more techniques in the book I haven't even tried.

At first, I was optimistic of some of Dr. Willey's ideas and decided to get a second opinion from a former semi-professional body builder with a degree in nutrition. He verified everything in the book that we discussed. Dr. Willey keeps the reading to the point and really does teach you how to use food as a drug. I have read several books on nutrition but they are so full of technical details that it becomes hard to understand. Dr. Willey keeps the reading to the point and I highly recommend this book.

All too often when you go to a doctor they are the last ones you want to listen to when it comes to nutritional advice. Why? Because they rarely ever look that healthy themselves! Those ideas take a back seat with this doctor. Dr. Willey teaches us how to manipulate our bodies hormonal response using proper nutrition so that it's BETTER THAN STEROIDS! Just like another book I highly recommend (Men's Health TNT Diet: The Explosive New Plan to Blast Fat, Build Muscle, and Get Healthy in 12 Weeks) he cites just enough research to satisfy my academic side and doesn't go into too much detail to drag out what can be simply stated. This book is a must have for anyone looking to improve their physique.
