Book Description

September 1, 2001
Research shows that children in families who sit down to dinner together are more likely to be successful, but on-the-go families need ideas for accomplishing this with meals that don't require much time in the kitchen. Offering a helping hand to exhausted parents who are often faced with screaming kids and no dinner plans, this cookbook for busy families is filled with easy recipes that parents and children can make together from whatever is in the house. Included are quick ideas for appetizers, soups, salads, main dishes, and desserts that can be made at any time. Recipes for dishes such as homemade onion soup, black bean salad, stuffed mushrooms, chicken with orange sauce, and chocolate banana cream pie are presented in an appealing, fun format that will inspire even those who hate to cook.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Working with children in a variety of educational settings, author Pamela Marx began experimenting with cooking as a way to teach cultural awareness, history and social studies. Since little fingers often went off in unexpected directions, the recipes used had to be easy and quick leading to her first cookbook, The Travel the World Cookbook. From these beginnings, Marx began developing recipes that were easy and quick to prepare not only for classes of 30 students but also for parents and families as well. In Better than Takeout (& Faster, Too) Marx shares recipes developed over the years in writing her monthly family cooking column, We're Cooking, as well as those gathered from friends, relatives and co-workers, all of whom are too busy to spend much time in the kitchen. Her other writing credits include Quick Writes, We the People, Take a Quick Bow, Practical Plays and several other educational resource books for teachers and families. Marx is also a lawyer, teacher trainer and workshop leader, 4-H leader and mother of two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain fun!, February 11, 2002
This review is from: Better Than Take-Out (& Faster, Too) (Paperback)
Better Than Take-Out is a very creative manual for busy people who like to eat well. Chapters on Extra Easy Appetizers, Simple Soups, Made-in-Minutes Main Dishes, Scrumptious Salads & Sides, and Desserts in a Dash offer up quick, nutritious, zippy entrees with style. Each chapter title page has the index of recipes and page numbers displayed, making for quick and easy finding of favorite recipes. One of the most fun chapters is the first, Cook As You Are. From Red Beans and Rice, to Mediterranean Starter, this chapter is about fast, experimental, creative approaches to good eating. The author suggests,"Come back to this section whenever you don't know what to put on the table or are feeling that mealtime is monotonous." With Better than Take-Out, it is a guarantee they won't be!

A few example of tantalizing recipes are Linguine with Gorgonzola and Broccoli Sauce, Black Bean and Corn Tacorito, New Mexican Posole (a stew of hominy, ground pork, chiles, lime, and spices), and Warm Rice Salad with Shrimp. Dessert ideas include Raspberry Trifle, Fresh Berries and Sweetened Sour Cream, and Chocolate Banana Cream Pie.

Better Than Take-Out is obviously designed to be user-friendly. What makes the book a bonus is it is just plain fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Cartoons and Realistic Recipes, May 24, 2006
This review is from: Better Than Take-Out (& Faster, Too) (Paperback)
"You can get a quick dinner out of practically anything - a little of this, a little of that and supper's ready. Using the ideas here and whatever is in your cupboard, your family will think you have been planning dinner all day."

Better Than Take-Out (& Faster, Too) is filled with humorous cartoons that make the recipes especially fun. The timesaver tips show you how to cook rice in the microwave and save time on other preparation steps.

The recipes are divided into six main chapters:

Cook as You Are
Extra Easy Appetizers
Simple Soups
Made-in-Minutes Main Dishes
Scrumptious Salads & Sides
Desserts in a Dash

Examples of the recipes:

Orange Herb Marinade
Dressed Cream Cheese
Stuffed Mushrooms
Cheesy Potato Soup
Pork Medallions with Cherries and Onions
Pasta with Artichoke Sauce
Peaches Caramel
Ambrosia

Each recipe has simple directions in a paragraph format, preparation times and variations. Like the Chocolate Banana Cream Pie has variations for puddings or you could use cherry pie filling for the fruit.
