This review is from: For a Better Tomorrow (Audio CD)
"Low Level Radiation" was my introduction to Mad Science Fair. It is played on Pandora's Swervedriver station (I guess the band has some shoegazer qualities). It is a slow, dark, beautiful song. It is the only song of theirs that is played on that station but, since the CD is so reasonably priced, it was worth the try. "...For a better tomorrow" turned out to be a very solid album and gets regular rotation on my CD player. Here is a brief look at the track listing:
"No Room For Error"--Awesome! Serious rocker! A very catchy song. One of my favorites. The bridge really kicks! "All I Do Is Wrong"--Another, catchy rocker. Kind of Foo Fighter-esque. "Shot On Sight"--Slower at first but then builds up in tempo. Nice, pleasant track and one of my favorites. "Low Level Radiation"--Beautiful song. The reason for buying the CD. "Shimmy Shammy"--A neat little upbeat track with some cool guitar work. "Retro Anthem"--Reminds me of alternative bands of the 1990s. Sebadoh, perhaps? Maybe that explains the title. Actually, this is my least favorite song on the album. Not that it is particularly bad but it sounds like geeks trying to sound cool: "It's a distance I can never gauge, Oh Right!---[rocking and rolling]." I picture science nerds rocking out just because of the name of the band. Probably un-Fair. "Green Day vs. Weezer"--Uh,...Green Day. I'm not sure what the lyrics have to do with those bands ("We're getting older now, we can't talk about it now"), but it is an OK track, it is not one of the best. "Leave Me Alone"--Another catchy song. This one gets stuck in your head. "The Learning Curve"--Rocks! This track and "No Room For Error" are the two serious, fast rockers on here. "The World I Want"--The beginning always makes me think of Def Leppard's "Hysteria." Slow and pleasant track at first but, unlike "Low Level Radiation," the rock 'n roll kicks in. If intrigued, check out their MySpace page where you can listen to a lot of these songs. The CD is only 36 minutes in total, so it is a nice album to listen to during a lunch break or those little relaxing moments. Put the CD player on repeat and these catchy tunes will become very memorable. The songs, though short, have a lot of character and meat to them. I recommend "...for a better tomorrow." |
