Book Description

0192801082 978-0192801081 February 8, 2001
This easy-to-use guide helps readers improve their wordpower and is full of practical advice on how to effectively manage dictionaries, thesauri, and other language reference books. Useful tips for tackling spelling and the meaning of difficult words are included, along with a comprehensive reference section that highlights easily confused words, foreign terms, and word formation. Topic-based noun lists, covering architecture, the human body, countries, music, mathematics, and language help expand vocabulary, and a lexicon of "hard" words provides needed assistance with the most problematic terms. Overall, this book allows readers to develop a better understanding as well as to finesse their use of the English language.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is the book for impressing your friends or improving your British vocabulary with obscure words that even Brits don't know. Oddly, it begins with a couple of elementary chapters on using the dictionary, spelling (British and American), often-confused words ("caddie" and "caddy"), and foreign words and then gives long listings of technical words in categories from "Animals, Birds, Sea Life" to "Currencies" to "Heraldry" to "Winds and Weather." It ends with a lexicon of hard words, inexplicably including such easy words as "excerpt" and "expedite" with "enzootic" and "eyot" (defined as an "ait") just in the E section. This book is fun for language mavens but hopeless for people who might really want to improve their vocabulary, since so many of the words are totally obscure or useless.
