5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice on How to Make It Through, May 6, 2000

This review is from: For Better or Worse: For Couples Whose Child Has Died (Paperback)
This book focusus on the need for couples to understand the grief process as they grieve their lost child(ren), how the grief affects the marriage and how to nurture the marriage during such an intense time of pain. The focus is on loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death.

During this time, grief work is intensely centered on the loss of the child. Ms. Doerr's book provides insight on how the husband is grieving and how the wife is grieving and how each person can respect and understand that the other is grieving differently.

As a bereaved parent, I used this book to initiate discussion about the loss of our son David with my husband. I also asked him to read it, which he did. By both of us reading it, we were able to understand why one could be upset and fraught with grief while the other was doing OK that day. We used this book to make sure that we were addressing our marriage as we each grieved.

The death of a child is the most heartwrenching trauma. Ms. Doerr's book guides and reminds the parents that they have each other at this time, and the marriage needs to nurtured too.
