Bacon's third entry in her Northrop Hall series is set in post-WWII England and focuses on the Crawleys: Sebastian, Celia, and their children. Readers familiar with the previous Northrop Hall books will recall that Sebastian fell in love with Diana Arndale and intended to marry her, but, thanks to the war and machinations of Sebastian's aunt Selina, he was forced to wed Celia, with whom he is now trapped in a loveless, miserable marriage. Only Felicity, the youngest Crawley, is certain that she can help her father--by keeping Celia away from him and eventually finding a way for him to divorce her. This goal guides nearly everything Felicity does, from her choice of education and career to her love life. The saga of what ultimately happens to the Crawleys--and especially to Felicity--drives the plot this time, but Bacon surrounds the central action with engaging subplots and her always-vivid characters.
