About the Author

Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo started her professional career as a physical therapist after getting her master’s degree at Duke University. It was then that she realized that every goal we have—whether it is related to our bodies, relationships, jobs, or lives—requires a significant mental edge in order to achieve it.

In her quest to help people actualize their dreams, Lombardo went back to school to get her PhD in clinical psychology. Wanting to help people “before they need a couch,” she now coaches, consults, and speaks to groups about how to achieve their desired results.

Lombardo is a highly sought-after speaker and media consultant who has been honored by giving a prestigious TEDx talk. I'm about halfway through and want to recommend this book to everyone. We can all relate to feelings and behaviors in this book and the strategies to help you see yourself in a different way are great. I was quite surprised to find out that I am more of a perfectionist than I thought. It is straightforward and gives you the tools you need to affect change in your life. There are many books on dealing with procrastination, perfectionism, self esteem. Why another? Because this not only looks at the root cause of it, but guides to action to make changes. Well done with exercises and evaluation that is tailored to the reader, with the reader's answers then where to go from there. Excellent, easy to understand - slowing down reading to absorb what the author was saying was sometimes a bigger thing. THINK as you read and there is much to gain from this book. Well worth the cover price.

Live fully. Many times the only one holding us back is ourselves. This gives ways to change that. There's no re-ride on life - make it count.

I've never really thought of myself as a perfectionist - but realize after reading Better than Perfect and taking the quiz there are ways I certainly can add more peace and balance to life. I love the strategies Dr. Lombardo lays out in this practical, easy to read and impactful book.

Hello, my name is Gio and I am a perfectionist. I set unachievable goals for myself and then beat myself up when I don't achieve them. I think in all or nothing terms. I have strict rules about how I and other people should behave and judge me and them harshly when we break them. Needless to say, these behaviours have seriously, and negatively, impacted any aspect of my life, from work to relationships. It's only in the past year that I've finally realised how destructive perfectionism can be and have started taking step to overcome it. One of these steps was picking up Better Than Perfect by Dr Elizabeth Lombardo.

A perfectionist herself, Dr Lombardo knows well how perfectionism prevents not only positivity and happiness, but also our productivity. After explaining what perfectionism is, she shares 7 techniques to help you silence your inner critic and create a more fulfilling, happier life. Her exercises and suggestions for behavioural changes are practical and helpful. They include choosing passion rather than fear (perfectionists are usually motivated by fear of failure rather than passion for whatever it is they are doing) and stopping comparing yourself to others in an attempt to feel better about yourself. It just has the opposite effect. Although the tips are simple, putting them in practice is not easy, especially for perfectionists, who feel frustrated if they can't do something perfectly well on their very first try. Just stick with it, or recruit a friend to hold you accountable if you must. The tips work, they just take time.

The book is a fast, easy, and accessible read. Lombardo shares many stories from her personal life as well as case studies of her clients, highlighting how much their lives changed for the better when they put these techniques into practice.

This book is incredibly full of tools for self-discovery AND action planning. It's one thing to offer the diagnosis, but Dr. Lombardo takes it a giant step forward with many resources and tools to take improvement action. I appreciate the personal stories and the approachable style of writing. This is more than a book - it's a comprehensive resource guide. Well worth reading and well worth practicing!

Am still in first few chapters but love this style of writing and, more importantly, actually has information and ideas I haven't already come across. I'm fascinated by the connection between my perfection and eating. Has already been an eye opener! Is helping me let go of some of my self harshness for wanting perfection in all things I believe I have control over.
