Book Description

October 30, 2005
Amelia Morgan dreams of a handsome prince who would take one look at her and fall in love. Together they would find a dynasty of magnificent horses and live happily ever after. What she never counted on was her baby brother losing her beloved stallion to a slick card shark. Desperate not to lose her dream, she gambles that the threat of marriage would cause the card shark to cut and run rather than go through with a hasty marriage to a total stranger. Alex Laird is no dummy. He calls Amelia's bluff, fully expecting her to jilt him at the altar. Then the question of the horse's ownership would be indisputably his.

These two stubborn foes go through with a hasty marriage, neither willing to let go of their claim to the horse. Stuck with each other for the time being, each comes up with a plan to secure their future. Unfortunately, their goals are once again at odds. For a while, Alex decides an annulment is the answer to their predicament. Amelia takes a different tact. She believes the only way to see her dream come true is to make Alex fall in love with her. The struggles that ensue become more than a battle of wills. It becomes a battle of the heart where dreams are won and lost at the turn of a card.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* When her brother loses Applegate, Amelia Morgan's beloved prize horse, to professional gambler Alex Laird, Amelia refuses to let the horse leave without her. After the sheriff says Amelia can't go with Alex unless they get married, Alex decides to call Amelia's bluff. Much to his shock and chagrin, Amelia readily becomes his bride at an impromptu wedding. With no intention of making Amelia his wife in the truest sense of the word, Alex intends to leave her in his huge house along with all the other treasures he's amassed; but perky Amelia wins over the servants, and soon, Alex, too, feels drawn to his spirited wife. With this poignant and humorous tale of the redeeming power of love, Parra has added yet another candid, courageous, can-do heroine to her Morgan Family series, which includes Wyoming Wedding (2004) and The Marryin' Kind (2005). And it's a sure bet that readers who love the roguish gambler heroes in Georgina Gentry's To Tempt a Texan (2005), LaVyrle Spencer's The Gamble (1994), and Nan Ryan's Lifetime of Heaven (1994) will go for Parra's rogue, too. More About the Author

Nancy J. Parra's love of story started early. Enthralled with Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, she tried to talk her 5th grade best friend into writing a pioneer book with her. When that didn't work out, she wrote stories on her own, but soon discovered her short stories were growing longer and longer. She wrote her first full length novel before she was 21. In an attempt to be practical, she got a BS in Journalism, but discovered it was more fun to interview the people in her head and returned to writing novels on the side. Nancy sold her first novel in 2002, and is always writing something new.
With an MA in Writing Popular Fiction, Ms. Parra has written articles on writing, and has given workshops on writing techniques to various library and writers groups. She writes a weekly blog on the art and craft of writing, www.nancyjparra.blogspot.com. Visit her website at www.nancyjparra.com for more information, a list of her books and full reviews. She can also be found at www.facebook.com/nancyjparra and would love to add you as her friend.
