Review of The Betting Doctor,
This review is from: The Betting Doctor (Perfect Paperback)
Reed Hogben is a professional handicapper who has written a very professional book about the art and science of sports betting. It is not a book for those who are looking for a quick system or magic formula. Of course books offering quick systems or magic formulas shouldn't be books for anyone because as Dr. Hogben states there are no magic formulas.
Unlike most handicapping books he starts out with money management. Of which he says no matter how good a handicapper you are you cannot win without proper money management. He then goes into detail on how he handicaps the NFL, college football, the NBA and major league baseball. So if you are looking to put the time and work needed, and it is a lot of time and work, he does a good job of laying out the methods required to be successful at betting sports.

The Best....and I've read almost all of them,
This review is from: The Betting Doctor (Perfect Paperback)
If you were like me and were looking for a step by step guide to the process of handicapping, then Reed Hogben hit a home run with his "The Betting Doctor". With so many fluff books that rephrase betting terminology and explain what a point spread is, this book was truly a breath of fresh air. Reed wasnt afraid to give away some of his secrets as to the "How's" and "Why's" of NFL, College FB, NBA, and MLB. My only disappointment being that the book didnt cover any college basketball or hockey handicapping.
This review really cant give this book enough praise. In one small case study of mine, I turned a $100 bankroll into over $2000 and counting in the last two months using the basic principles from this book. I'd say that more than made up for the cost of the book. Last but certainly not least, Reed's website is the best value of all. Taking the basic points from the book to advanced levels with free statistics and articles, even answering personal questions via email, its truly a diamond in the rough.

One of the Best Books on Process of Sports Handicapping,
By 037 (san francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Betting Doctor (Perfect Paperback)
I've read many of the books in this arena and would have to say that Dr. Reed does the best job of taking you through the step-by-step process of sports handicapping. If you know anything about these types of books, this is very rare especially considering that most sports handicapper's take the approach: "that a majician doesn't reveal his trade secrets." He covers many of the American sports and does so in a succinct fashion, providing you with more insight per page than any other I have read.

Disappointing and Short,
This review is from: The Betting Doctor (Perfect Paperback)
I was disappointed with this book, but it's something I've come to expect with most sports betting books. The book is quite short, and to be honest I feel slightly ripped off, considering the book is $30.00 and other more informative books (like Wong's book, and King Yao's) cost half the price.
There really is very little "meat" on handicapping any of the major sports.. Hogben talks a lot about the importance of finding motivation in a team, but doesn't go into great detail on how to find it. I think if you are very new to gambling, you'd be better off buying "Sharp Sports Betting" by stanford wong, "Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting", by King Yao, or "Beat the Sports Books" by Dan Gordon (for football). I don't recommend this book
