Review

Thomas knocks it out of the park again….Ronny Logan and Austin Hawk are looking for peace out by Rainbow Lane. They both have reasons to crave solitude—he’s recovering from injury, she from grief and a year’s travel—so they’re surprised to enjoy each other’s company. Ronny also becomes friends with neighbors Dusti and Abby Delaney, sisters who are counting on a poker tournament to make their dreams come true. As Dusti gets poker lessons from flirtatious Kieran O’Toole, tournament organizer Reagan Truman waits for rodeo rider Noah McAllen, her longtime love interest, to “grow up and man up.” Thomas is a master at creating damaged yet appealing characters, and their expressions of love—as siblings, as friends, as partners—are intense and beautiful. Their paths to happiness are interwoven in an intricate tapestry with the tournament as backdrop, combining in an epic tale of the kind of love that lasts forever” –Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Betting the Rainbow

This was a great story that wraps up a lot of stories about several people. I recommend that you read some of the other books that come before this one but you won't totally be lost if you read this as a stand alone. I never know where Jodi Thomas is taking these characters in her books, I'm just grateful to be along for the ride!! I love her books and I recommend you buy these and enjoy the wonderful characters from the town of Harmony!!

Thomas is a wonderful and very readable author and the books in her Harmony series have a been a welcome addition to my collection. Betting the Rainbow is a real treat for those of us who have come to know and love the characters in this series because she wraps up some relationships that have been unfolding in a very satisfying way. As always, Thomas blends characters, emotions and romance seamlessly and we are immediately drawn into ebb and flow of Harmony and it's people.

Three stories make up the meat and potatoes of Betting the Rainbow, (a poker term I had never heard before but it fit the story perfectly in more than one situation). First is our kind and hardworking, ever patient Reagan who after she receiving a "gift" from a stranger to keep for her longtime boyfriend, begins to wonder if she has been a fool for staying loyal to Noah all this time while waiting for him to finally get off the rodeo circuit and come home for good. Noah is coming home, but it won't be to the same Reagan he left behind. This story tugs at the heart strings since everyone knows these two belong together, but sometimes saying I'm sorry just isn't enough.

Dusti Delaney's dream is to make a living as a photographer while her sister Abby is only one semester away from her life long dream of being a nurse. All they need is money, more than the eggs and pecans on their family farm can provide. So when Dusti learns of a big poker tournament taking place right there in Harmony, Dusti decides this is her chance to get enough money to make their dreams come true and she enlists a tall, handsome young Scotsman to teach her the game.

If you haven't read any or only a few of the Harmony books, this won't make any sense to you. This book has characters that were involved in previous stories and this book takes a look at where they are in their lives now. The main characters Abby and Dusti Delaney and Austin Hawk are new and their story is told in this book.

I consider this a catch-up story for Harmony. Ronny Logan has returned after her world tour and has rented a cottage so that she can spend some time alone. Beau Yates and Border Biggs are becoming stars in Nashville but return to the Buffalo's Bar at least once a month to do a show. Reagan Truman is going to Vegas to watch Noah McAllen in a rodeo and have a talk with him about their future.

Austin Hawk is at his summer house recovering from an injury sustained during military action, he doesn't want company, he only wants to regain his heath and Ronny is disturbing his solitude.

Abby and Dusti have a pecan farm and also raise chickens. Money is tight but Dusti has a dream, if she can win the local poker tournament the prize includes a buy in to a million dollar game in Vegas. If she can finish "In the Money" she will have enough to send Abby back to nursing school to finish her last year and she will have enough to open a photography studio in Harmony. The only way she can do that is to be coached by Kieron O’Brian who plays at a national level. Kieron has always been too shy to let Dusti know how he feels but this might just be his chance.

A visit to Harmony is always a joy and this just adds to the past experience. Old friends Ronny and Reagan are a big plus. This was a great read!

This novel ties up a lot of loose ends for the people in this small town. I was glad to see how these characters made out. I noticed that the next one seems to be a prequel. Should be interesting.

This story appeared to be written for the purpose of finishing up story lines from the previous books and that was OK. I think Jodi should leave the contemporary times in Harmony now, which appears to be what she is going to do. I am really looking forward to her next novel that will relate the story of how Harmony was founded in frontier days.

I think this may be my favorite one so far. If you haven't been introduced to Harmony, I suggest you grab the first one and then sit back and enjoy the characters that Jodi brings to life. You won't be disappointed.
