Book Description

When her father loses the family's Nevada ranch in a poker game, Hope McNaughton decides to win it back--from New Jersey Mafia boss Big Julie Saladino. She hasn't played cards in a while. But she's got time...thirty days. Thirty days before they have to move out or swim with the fishes.

Hope calls on her honorary uncles--who are totally legit, honestly--to sharpen her game. Poker champion Tanner Wingate--whose shady past is all behind him, really (except when the cops come calling)--wants to pull her out of that deep water and into his life.

Hope doesn't want to get mixed up with a card shark like Tanner, who's too much like her father--an irresponsible gambler who cheats and takes too many risks. But she'll do what she has to do to get the ranch back.

When she and Tanner both wind up in the Big Game with Big Julie, only one of them can win and neither can afford to lose. And whoever walks away with the pot will be the biggest loser.

But Tanner knows that the game's not really over until the fat lady sings, and all they need is a fake black ops mission to discover that love's not such a gamble, after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivering on the genre with gentle humor October 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kay Keppler knows the genre from the tension and obstacles the lovers have to overcome -- all the way to their lovemaking. She delivers on the genre and even its stereotypes, but with gentle humor. For example, "It was like squeezing a traffic cone strapped to her chest."

She loves her characters. All of them. Women and men. Straight and parolee. From the quirky gambling "uncles" to the bad guy gangsters, and one's babe. Even the FBI. And of course the lead characters. You'll be smirking or laughing with or at all of them.

I know nothing of the world of high-stakes poker and Las Vegas that are the book's venue, but her details seem credible to me. And what I do know about, post-Soviet gangs, Mafia, bad parents, losing one's home, and ... organic farming -- is all true enough in Betting on Hope. True, but far more amusing in this escapist read than they are in real life. Whoever thought a rutabaga could be a weapon?

The challenges of the real world are grim. That is why I need well-told loving stories that remind me that all kinds of characters can be fun and human -- with all their foibles.

When your friends tell you that their troubles are getting them down, you'll want to prescribe this book to put them back in balance. Betting on Hope, to borrow one of her character's phrases, is "cheap therapy." And like the "uncles" in her book, it makes "life bearable. Fun. Even cool."

3.0 out of 5 stars Poker Face August 14, 2012

This was a book based on a neat premise. It revolved around Las Vegas and Poker/gambling, but it did it in a way that did not make gambling look easy or enticing. It really showed how other people can get the advantage over you, even the casino, and that betting is basically not a good bet! So despite being about Las Vegas, it was rather wholesome.

It was a fun lighthearted read, that was a bit goofy at times. It was more sexual (contained more detail than was necessary) than I prefer. Overall it was a nice lighthearted read and rather fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining and witty April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book as I'm not one for gambling and am not very interested in Las Vegas. I was delightfully surprised. The main character (Hope) needs to win back their families ranch which was lost by her absent father in a card game. This book really draws you in and you can't help but laugh at all of the situations that occur in her effort to learn how to play cards to win. In the process she falls in love with someone that isn't exactly what he seems. In spite of the topic being one I don't have a lot of respect for, the author weaves a lot of good truths into it. Gambling does impact a lot of lives and although the book is about gambing, she makes it plain the hurt caused to one family as a result. The author also draws home the point that not everyone participating in a card game is a bad person or addicted. I really love how the "hero" in the story helps Hope achieve her goals. This is an enjoyable book with a lot of humor. The characters are each well defined. I would not recommend this for a young adult audience because of both gambling and a physical relationship between the two main characters.
