5.0 out of 5 stars A Good One!
The heart health edition of this cookbook is a fantastic edition to the Betty Crocker Family of cookbooks. In a special 32 page section at the front of the book it details various facts regarding heart health geared primarily towards women. With tips about fat, salt, fiber, etc, this section applies to really anyone and also pinpoints specific recipes in the main cookbook...

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I wanted so much to get this cookbook as I've been a Betty Crocker Cookbook fan for many years. This is supposed to be a "heart health edition" but many of the recipes are anything but. Except for a section in the beginning of the book where heart health is discussed, there is almost no mention of heart health within the book regarding the actual recipes. For example,...

The heart health edition of this cookbook is a fantastic edition to the Betty Crocker Family of cookbooks. In a special 32 page section at the front of the book it details various facts regarding heart health geared primarily towards women. With tips about fat, salt, fiber, etc, this section applies to really anyone and also pinpoints specific recipes in the main cookbook that are heart healthy.

The many recipes in the cookbook aren't just vegetarian or ones that are going to be bland. There are recipes for Meats, Soups, Casseroles, Desserts and just about anything else in this nearly six hundred page cookbook. Pictures are often small but colorful and there are plenty of drawings and charts to assist you in the kitchen.

Beyond the tremendous number of recipes that are quick and fast or long and slow as well as everything in between, there is a really helpful index. 34 pages in length the index tags certain recipes as "low-fat" or "fast" etc. so the cook in a hurry can find what he or she is looking for. Spiral bound inside a bright red hardback cover that makes the book lay flat right where you want it, the book is a great addition to your kitchen.

For example, having a recipe for pie crust that uses shortening and butter is not heart healthy. Many recipes are high in calories as well.
Another cookbook which I selected because of its heart health content looks a lot better. It's called WomenHeart's ALL HEART Family Cookbook. This one really is serious about promoting heart health and I'm looking forward to trying many of their recipes. I'll be returning Betty Crocker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bless your heart!, September 8, 2008

This is a great cookbook filled with many delicious recipes. I love cookbooks and this one is already a favorite. I have made the blueberry banana bread twice in the last month and my family loves it. There are many pictures of the meals and instructions.
In the first section of the book you will find a wealth of information on heart healthy cooking and a section of recipes dedicated to just that. Through out the cook book you will find many more recipes considered low in fat and labeled for your convenience.
If you love cookbooks and want to do more for your heart, then this Betty Crocker Heart Health Edition Cookbook is a must have.

Four generations of my family have used Betty Crocker as our cooking bible. At this stage in our lives, my husband and I are "trimming down" recipes as much as possible, so I was eager to acquire this version. I confess I've been unable to use it as much as I would like because the darn thing keeps falling apart. The pages come out of the binding, I put them back, the fall out again, and it doesn't matter because the binding has come out of the cover. I'm about to get out the three-hole punch and just put the darn thing in a note book, and then I'll be able to judge the recipes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my heart, you don't!, January 16, 2011
This review is from: Betty Crocker Cookbook, Heart Health Edition (Spiral-bound)
I bought this book from a bargain table, and did not have the chance to look through it before purchasing. I am already a health-conscious cook, but thought there may be some additional info that would be of benefit, as a family member had recently had heart surgery. My advice is, if you are really looking for a book dedicated to heart-healthy food, pass this one by. Many of the recipes call for lots of eggs and heavy cream and butter. There are notes on some recipes indicating how to lighten them, but, in my opinion, these should have been the featured recipes and not the tips. Seriously! The heart association should be careful if recommending this one. I am donating this to our library book sale, with a personal note inside reading "buyer, be aware!"

This was a gift for my mom on mother's day. Wow, we had been trying to find this book for a while. And at the price I got it, one of the best gifts ever. She is loving the book and recipes.

1.0 out of 5 stars **Buyer beware** NOT a heart-healthy cookbook!, March 1, 2010

Do not buy this cookbook if you're looking for alternative ways to make your favorite foods... one of the first chicken recipes is skillet fried chicken at 23 grams of fat per serving. I would estimate one low fat recipe for ever four full fat recipes... a "red dress" scam in my opinion.

There is good heart care information, but nothing that can't be found on the American Heart Association web site... eat more fish, veggies, whole grains, etc.

May be better off trying the Betty Crocker's New Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook found here: Betty Crocker's New Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook (Betty Crocker Home Library)

3.0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Heart Health Cooking is Okay, December 12, 2009
This review is from: Betty Crocker Cookbook, Heart Health Edition (Spiral-bound)
I am a lifetime Betty Crocker Cookbook user. I even collect old editions from garage sales and antique stores. I was excited to discover this new healthier Betty, at first. However, when my daughter and turned to a recipe we knew from long ago expecting heart healthy changes, what we found instead were omissions in the necessary recipe steps. Because we'd make the dish many times before and recognized an important step was missing, we inserted it into the margin, but not everyone has that foreknowledge. I am not fond of having to double check my old Betty Crocker Cookbook editions, just in case there are other omissions.

However, this book has a unique heart health guide in the front, as well as a multitude of low fat tips and fast cooking tips tucked into most of the pages. The Betty Crocker Cookbook also has good photo prompts, a sturdy hardbound cover, and spiral binding that lays flat for easy use in the kitchen so the pages don't flop out of place while in use. It is a step in the right direction for the Betty Crocker publishers. They do need to check the editing much more carefully on their next edition - I know I'll be checking it!
