Amazon.com Review

For 75 years, Betty Crocker has delivered trusted culinary advice and recipes to millions of consumers. Now Betty's got a new look, she's lightened up her recipes, and she's sharing them with the world in Betty Crocker's Healthy New Choices. As hokey as the title sounds, Betty's latest book (which was actually written by a team of editors, recipe developers, and nutritionists) is filled with sound, basic nutrition advice and information and over 400 appealing recipes for healthy everyday meals. Betty also includes wellness tips and a list of the top 10 foods for health, gives strategies for preventing major diseases, and even explores the mind-body connection. (Yes, Betty has taken up yoga, meditation, and aromatherapy.)

But the recipes are the stars of Healthy New Choices. There are sections for everything from appetizers, snacks, and smoothies to main dishes and desserts. This time around Betty includes vegetarian and ethnic entrees and lightens up classic favorites like Guacamole, Caramelized Popcorn, Macaroni & Cheese, Chicken Fricassee, and Rice Pudding by slashing fat and calories without sacrificing flavor. The recipes are quick, simple, and easy; require no special ingredients or difficult techniques; and are accompanied by nutrition information and diet exchanges. If you're short on time, trying to cook light, and tired of the dozen or so recipes that you regularly depend on, then Healthy New Choices will help brighten up your diet. --Ellen Albertson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Just 6 weeks ago, my 49 year old husband had a mild heart attack. That ALONE can change your life forever. When his cardiologist said for him to eat low fat, low cholesterol foods I clearly remembered 15 years ago the two of us attempting to lose some weight and trying to find some low fat meals that we enjoyed. I must admit those memories of tasteless, dry, and mundame meals made me shudder, but I decided to get to the computer and see if there were any cookbooks that had some "decent sounding" recipes and good reviews. (Taking someone's word about meals is precarious because one has no way of knowing the others' taste is foods, but I thought I'd give it a try.) And so I found Betty Crocker's (one of my all time favorite cookbook authors!) "Healthy New Choices" I decided to order it and see what I could come up with.
Since the day I received it I have been using it almost every night and we just can't BELIEVE that this is anything but DELICIOUS and INTERESTING food that is prepared relatively quickly and with no trips to a "specialty market" for ingredients! My husband was truly a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy, and one who just LOVED tasty, and enticing meals. HE IS NOT DISAPPOINTED with ANY of the recipes I have made so far, and I haven't even BEGUN to get through the whole book.
A few of our favorites are Thai Scallops and Noodles, Oriental Barbecued Chicken, and the Chocolate Chip Cookies. ALL the recipes in the book have the Nutritional Information right on the same page as the recipe so one can be assured that what they are making is indeed the "right thing" for your family's special needs.
I would recommend this cookbood to any and ALL of you who want to eat both healthily and enjoyably!

I bought this cookbook because I was in the process of trying to lose 20 pounds through Weight Watchers. This book had all the information I needed to help convert to the right "points". But best of all, the recipes are wonderful! With only one exception, every recipe has been very flavorful, quick and easy to prepare, and I have kept using the book even after reaching my goal weight because I have been so happy with it. The recipes do not taste "low-fat, low-cal, etc." They are good enough to serve company! Definitely recommended!

I have used the book to prepare various dishes from completely vegetarian to meaty and I am very pleased with the results. I especially like the nutrition information that accompanies each recipe and also the serving tips. My husband who is usually less enthusiastic about the word "healthy" truly enjoys the scrumptious dishes I put together. Overall, it's a book everyone who is health-conscious should have in the shelf.

This is a wonderful cookbook. The recipes are simple and use easy to find ingredients. The preparation time is very short and the food is very flavorful. Many of the recipes have a distinct regional flair to them, but are made with ingredients readily available in your local grocery store.
In short, my favorite cookbook for the busy cook looking to serve interesting, healthy dinners to his or her family.

Simply wonderful. The book has delicious recipes with ingredients that most people would have on hand. The nutritional analysis includes fiber, so WW members can easily figure out points. After sharing my cookbook with others, 3 more people have bought it. It will take quite awhile to get through all the new recipes that I want to try. I haven't been disappointed yet.

I really wanted to love this cookbook, especially since the color photos are appetizing, the food is quick and easy to prepare, and most of the recipes seem comforting. However, since this book touts itself as health-conscious, I cannot give it five stars. Too many of the recipes called for processed ingredients, e.g., bottled sauces (full of artificial thickeners and preservatives), seasoning packets (loaded with MSG/salt and man-made chemicals), ramen noodles (unhealthy trans-fats), even artificially-flavored cheese loaves (yuck!). There is also too much dependence on frozen and canned vegetables, which, though great at reducing cooking times once in a while, should not be the backbone of a healthy eating regimen.

That said, the book is presented well and there are a some healthy recipes in here that I have cooked/will cook (and a few more that I will cook using substitutions of fresh ingredients). But to be honest, there are much better healthy cooking books out there. Try EatingWell's Healthy in a Hurry, or some of the Weight Watchers cookbooks (whether or not you need to lose weight, these provide excellent, healthy recipes). (My review gives the book 2 stars and I can't go back and change it, but it should be 3 stars).

This cookbook made me a healthy cook. I had long been searching for healthy, low-fat recipes--dishes that I actually wanted to prepare and eat more than once--with very little success. With this book, I have added a dozen recipes to my regular repertoire, and every week, I try out something new. Not every recipe is a winner, but many of them are delightful, and some are really "wow" recipes. The abundant nutritional information with each recipe is really helpful.
