5.0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite cookbook, August 8, 2003
By
Elizabeth Lakatos (Wooster, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
Besides my mother's recipes, this is the cookbook I used the most (and I own about 150 cookbooks). By luck, I bought it not long after I got married. The content of this book is a solid foundation for a lifetime of good cooking for weekdays and holidays. I read with curiosity all the comments and tips. They provide good basic information that is necessary for international dishes. The recipes are very reliable, clear and precise. The pictures are great and very helpful. I tried almost all the recipes and we have numerous favorites.
The book is not outdated even 23 years after it was first published. A great selection from all over the world. I bought several copies to my friends and now I buy used ones for my daughters. I don't like Betty Crocker's New International Cookbook as much as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook, April 25, 2006

I have also had this book since soon after its publication. I have never been disappointed with the results and refer to it often. The recipes create an authentic tasting international dish, with nice presentation. They may not be as authentic in source ingredients as the Time-Life Series of International Cookbooks, but, and this is a big deal, Betty Crocker makes these dishes accessible to every cook, much like Julia Child made French cooking accessible to the American home cook. My copy is full of sticky notes and bookmarks on the many pages I return to on a regular basis every year (Hot Cross Buns, St. Lucia Buns, Coulibiac, Steak Ezterhazy, Blueberry Crisp, Cheese-stuffed Mushrooms, Greek Cheese Puffs, Couscous, etc etc).

I am sad that I can't buy the original edition in new publication because I truly think it is one of the best in my collection and want my daughter to have a copy!

This is a very good international cookbook. My mother and I fought over it so much, that I ended up buying her a copy. We both love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-Time Favorite, March 28, 2009
This review is from: Betty Crocker's International Cookbook (Hardcover)
I got my first copy of this cookbook when I was in junior high for a class project. Over the years I continued to use the book for other class projects as well as special occasions. A few years ago my first copy finally gave up the ghost. Like any good cookbook, its pages were stained, it's spine was broken and it had several pages falling out. Thank God for sites like Amazon so I could rather easily replace my now out-of-print favorite cookbook. Now that I am a more experienced cook, I don't use recipes as often as I once did, but I still use this as a reference. I am also planning to start a cookbook collection for my step-children as they are the age where they will be leaving the nest, and this is definitely one of the books going into that collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is still my "go to" cookbook after 30 years, June 15, 2009
By
I bought this cookbook probably 30 years ago when it first came out, and I still refer to it almost every single week. If you are looking for authentic international recipes that have not been "dumbed down" to suit most American taste, this is the cookbook for you. The spinakopita recipe (phyllo dough with spinach and feta cheese filling) is something I make all the time, still using this recipe, the best one I have ever found. My book has traveled with me to Europe and back, and the recipes in it have been a hit on two continents (seriously). Now my most favorite cookbook is beginning to show its ago, so I am glad I can purchase another one. If you are looking for one cookbook to add to your collection, that you will actually use, and not just have around to gather dust, I recommend this cookbook. Still the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to make, Authentic Tasting Recipes, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Betty Crocker's International Cookbook (Hardcover)
Betty Crocker's International Cookbook by Betty Crocker. This book has lots of great recipes in it, including a great Szechwan Chicken recipe and a simple Cream of Mushroom soup recipe that I love. I've tried many of the recipes in this book, and, in general, I like them. My edition is the 1980 hardcover edition, which is now out of print. My copy of this one is falling apart, and I have difficulty keeping all the pages in order in it.

I have enjoyed this cook book for years. I just recently gave it as a gift. It has helped me make meals that have pleased me as the cook and my family and friends because they've experienced something different. And good. I never tell people how easy the meal was to fix. My secret.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook for 25 Years, January 4, 2012

This review is from: Betty Crocker's International Cookbook (Hardcover)
I'm on my third copy of this cookbook, having worn out the other two. Plus I've bought three copies as gifts for friends over the years. Every single recipe I've tried in the book tastes great and authentic. There's not another cookbook I can say that about. The directions are clear, "how-to" illustrations and photos of most recipes are included. Perhaps the best thing about this cookbook is that the ingredients for each recipe are easy to find. Yes, you don't have to climb the Himalayas or drive three states over and down a bumpy dirt road to get the ingredients. Just drive to your grocery store (one that carries ingredients, not just prepared food). I lived in Austria when I was in my 20s and I was so happy to find the Austrian Ham and Noodle Casserole recipe I was served in homes in Vienna. It's a family favorite. Another favorite is Chicken with Cornmeal Dumplings (I double the dumplings).

One caution. Some time ago I bought the 1994 revised "New" International Cookbook and was not happy with it. This was released during the "cut out the fat" era and the recipes simply don't taste as good. While it gets great reviews from people who own it, I bet they haven't tried recipes in the original 1980 edition.

Betty Crocker - please consider reprinting this great cookbook!

Does anyone know who actually complied these recipes and if he or she worked on any other cookbooks? I'd love to add another book of excellent recipes to my bookshelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our most loved cookbook, December 17, 2011
This review is from: Betty Crocker's International Cookbook (Hardcover)
My mom bought this cookbook when it first came out. It has been the most loved of all our cookbooks over the past 20 years. We've literally loved our copy to pieces, having used it so many times. I recently found another copy in a used bookstore in great condition and bought it as a Christmas present for my mom. The book is now regarded as one of our family heirlooms

The recipes are marvelous and most of them are fairly simple to follow. I have amazed my friends on multiple occasions with it's recipes. I highly reccomend this! You will not be dissapointed.

My sister had to take this book home with her while visiting so I had to order a new one. Caribbean Chicken and Rice Stew is easy and very tasty. There are several recipes in the book I use again and again. Very enjoyable book one of my favorite cookbooks.
