5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent vegetarian cookbook!
The recipes in this book are simple but interesting, and use ingredients which can be found at a typical grocery store. Each recipe provides an approximate required preparation and cooking time. Color photos are offered for many of the dishes, and the recipes are well-organized and easy to follow. There are a great many recipes (I didn't count them!), so I find...

1.0 out of 5 stars Typical Betty Crocker assembles convenience foods fare
I got this as a gift, so one consolation is I didn't pay for it. Most of the recipes here call for processed "convenience" foods and frozen vegetables. If you are going vegetarian, hate to cook, and not worried about health concerns or flavor for that matter, by all means, this is the book for you. However, if you are looking for vegetarian recipes that...

This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
The recipes in this book are simple but interesting, and use ingredients which can be found at a typical grocery store. Each recipe provides an approximate required preparation and cooking time. Color photos are offered for many of the dishes, and the recipes are well-organized and easy to follow. There are a great many recipes (I didn't count them!), so I find myself reaching for this book often, to find something different to make. I think this is a good book for new vegetarians, as it should erase the common misconception that vegetarian food is difficult to make and requires things like tofu and nutritional yeast! Many recipes suggest a simple meat addition, which would be helpful for families with both vegetarians and meat-eaters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes, July 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
The few recipes I have tried from this book I liked. They are easy to prepare and the ingredients arent too hard to find. I didn't think I could make so many good dishes without meat. There is also tips on the bottom of some recipes for adding meat if you wish. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes with common ingredients!, August 14, 2000
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
I've been looking to cut back on the amount of meat my family eats, with the added complication that my husband is a died-in-the-wool meat and potatoes man who is allergic to beans and soy. I've acquired a sizeable collection of vegetarian cookbooks, and while I've found recipes that we like and that my husband isn't allergic to in most of them, this is the cookbook I turn to again and again. The recipes here are easy to cook and feature ingredients that are found in any grocery store. The first time I flipped through this book, I was delighted to realize that I had the ingredients for several of the recipes already sitting on my pantry and refrigerator shelves! This isn't vegetarian "gourmet" fare, but the recipes are tasty and filling and easy to prepare. Serious vegetarians might scoff at this book, but I would definitely recommend it for "occasional vegetarians" or for those who are very new to, and perhaps intimidated by, the idea of vegetarian cooking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook!, January 10, 2001

I love this cookbook. Every recipe I've made has been a huge hit. One thing I like is that many of the ingredients are store bought, so not everything is homemade. For me, this saves a lot of time, but you still can throw a good meal together. There are several recipes that I use every week. The recipes are fairly simple and don't very long to prepare. It is easily a beginner book, but everyone can enjoy using this book. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for Veggie Teen, December 24, 2004

I became a Vegetarian about 6 months ago and have recieved no help from family. I got this book as a gift from my wonderful boyfriend and I love it! It is so easy to understand and the recipes are quick and simple, which is great for a busy student. There are recipes in here that I love and are so easy but that I would have never thought of otherwise. Everything in here is also very nutritious. Most meals are lower in calories (under 350) and contain nutritious ingredients that are easily found in your local supremarket. A lot of the ingredients my family already uses, which makes it great for split veggie/non-veggie households. Overall this is a wonderful book that I would recommend to any vegetarian, new or otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Vegetarian Cookbook I Own!!!, July 30, 2004
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
I've been a vegetarian for 6 years now and this was my first vegetarian cookbook that I bought, and it's still my favorite.

These recipes are quick and easy to make (for the majority anyway) with ingredients that are readily available in any grocery store (lots of veg. cookbooks have ingredients that are so obscure that I can never find them). There are many, many great tasting recipes in this book- even my non-vegetarian friends and family love many of the recipes in this book. And several of them include instruction for adding fish or chicken for those who still would like to include those in their diet.

It's a great buy, and you'll enjoy it for years to come!

If you are going vegetarian, hate to cook, and not worried about health concerns or flavor for that matter, by all means, this is the book for you. 4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, quick vegetarian recipes, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
This is a great cookbook for vegetarians who don't have a lot of time to cook and don't mind cooking with packaged items like canned beans and frozen vegetables. It would also be useful for someone easing into vegetarian eating, or someone trying to ease kids into vegetarian eating! It has lots of good recipes for soups, stews, and chilis (Curried Sweet Potato and Lentil Stew is one of my favorites, as is Red Beans and Rice Chili). Some other recipes I really enjoyed are Vegetable Jambalaya, Wild Rice Frittata, Rice Noodles with Peanut Sauce, and Pizza Casserole. A downside to this cookbook is that many of the dishes call for white rice, which I try to avoid. I found that in most cases it wasn't possible to substitute brown rice, which was a disappointment for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally a cookbook for the ordinary person, July 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
There are two kinds of cook books, the kind for enthusiasts that really enjoy gourmet cooking and the kind like me,a busy person who wants to eat healthy but does not want to search in a small southern town for exotic ingredients and spend alot of time in the kitchen. When I became a vegetarian many of the cookbooks I saw were difficult. I went to betty crocker in desperation because the first cook book I had as an adult was a basic betty crocker that told you everything from bisquits to big meals in easy to understand terms. This book is the same way. as I looked thru the book, none of the recipes were intimidating to me,the food is great and many of the things needed were already in my pantry. Thanks Betty, you came through again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy enough for a teen-age cook, October 12, 2005
By
This review is from: Betty Crocker's Vegetarian Cooking: Easy Meatless Main Dishes Your Family Will Love! (Hardcover)
I bought this book because my 16 year old duaghter wanted to eat more vegetarian meals. She has made 4 different recipes so far, and 3 were wonderful, even for nonvegetarians. One of the 3 was, according to her, not worth the trouble, but it was really delicious. Great book - clear directions even for a novice, good pictures of most dishes, and calorie/fat/fiber information for dieters. Highly recommended.
