Grade 5-7-- This slim biography/social history is an accurate and objective portrayal of this important woman and her times. In a straightforward, well-organized narrative, Taylor-Boyd has captured the spirit of Friedan's life and the sensitive mood of an era during which feminism, NOW, and the ERA were focal points. The readable text is interspersed with black-and-white photographs; large side margins include smaller photographs and pertinent quotations from literature, songs, and famous women and men of the day. The biography market is currently being glutted with series, all of which offer average accounts of famous people's lives. Titles that are similar in scope and purpose are: Sondra Henry and Emily Taitz's Betty Friedan: Fighter for Women's Rights (Enslow, 1990), Milton Meltzer's Betty Friedan: A Voice for Women's Rights (Viking, 1985), and Justine Blau's Betty Friedan (Chelsea House, 1990).
