4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Grey.
The all emcompassing "western writer", Zane Grey, portrays the pioneer life in a vivid realistic manner. Although the reader knows that it is fiction it is impossible not to feel that one is part of the unfolding drama. 3.0 out of 5 stars First Zane Grey I ever read! Very good!
Never wanted to pick up a Zane Grey because I thought his stuff was so male-oriented. But his portrayal of his ancestors piqued my interest, especially since the hero was female. I took the tale with a grain of salt, realizing how even family stories can grow into legend. I was moved, however, to investigate some of the historical persons mentioned in the book, such as...

Although the reader knows that it is fiction it is impossible not to feel that one is part of the unfolding drama. Betty Zane comes alive as she battles pride, traitors, and Indians to reach the arms of her lover Alfred Clarke. Mixed in this romance is the chilling fight for life by the whole pioneer settlement of Fort Henery. When completed the reader cannot help but be awed by pioneer life and the elequont writing of Zane Grey.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, December 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Twin Sombreros (Hardcover)
One of my favorite Zane Grey books. Brazos Keene is a cowboy with an honorable streak. When he stumbles into an injust situation he just can't walk away. A man has been killed and the dead man's twin siters are being forced off their ranch. Brazos decides to help them find the killers and get their ranch back. If you enjoy westerns, especially Grey's westerns, you'll enjoy this one. It has an excellent story with a lot of action and a little romance for the hero on the side. For those of you who wondered what happened to Brazos after Knights of the Range ended, you will be pleased with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've read over 60 of Grey's books and this is rates high., April 27, 1998

As a lover of the American West, I have read all of Zane Grey's western novels. This book is one of his very best. He combines his usual descriptive scenery as well as historical scenes in a very interesting fashion. As a woman, I believe this is one of his most romantic novels. The innocence of the relationships during this time period is just as exciting as a modern novel. I highly recommend this book as reading for all sexes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Betty Zane, November 27, 1999
As a descendant of Betty Zane, I found the book to be very enjoyable. How exciting it was to picture the everyday life of an ancestor. I know that the book is fiction, but it is also based on events and people who were real. Betty's run for gunpowder, is a documented fact, as was much of the history presented. My Great-Grandfather was a third cousin to Zane Grey, so this makes it even more special. I was not a Zane Grey reader before, as "Western Books" did not interest me. But as soon as I learned of the family connection I headed right for the library to read "Betty Zane" for the first time. I am purchasing a copy for my mother and my 10 year old grandson, as well as for myself. I guess this make me a Zane Grey fan now.

Never wanted to pick up a Zane Grey because I thought his stuff was so male-oriented. But his portrayal of his ancestors piqued my interest, especially since the hero was female. I took the tale with a grain of salt, realizing how even family stories can grow into legend. I was moved, however, to investigate some of the historical persons mentioned in the book, such as Lewis Wetzel, on the internet. What a fascinating time to read about. So MAYBE I'll read another Zane Grey book. We'll see.

In 1972 my father gave me a copy of this book in his efforts to instill in me the joy of reading. I still have that book and still love reading it after all these years. 31 years later I still enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars West is Best, December 31, 2002
This review is from: Betty Zane (Paperback)
Zane Gray is a master of the western tale. His books cover the western expansion from the French and Indian wars right down to the 50's. This particular book is more historical than others, but still rich with action and romance. Don't miss out on this and other books by the "King of the West". I have read nearly all of his 30+ books, and find myself master of all the major and minor events the Western expansion. His plots grow slightly repetative (boy meets girl, ect.)but her never sets his stories in the same year or "territory". His best book is "Riders of the Purple Sage".

I am 15 years old and I too am a descendant of Betty zane. I read this book after I started my research about my family, and after I had discovered that my ancestors had written books about one another. This book is great even for teens !!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and can't wait to read the sequels. It was an excellent story, it's well written, and takes you back to simpler days. My first western, and I'm definitely on the lookout for more.
