3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Enough
This book is great to share with your girlfriends. Cindy Chupack is clever and witty, and you will recognize some of her horror stories from Sex and the City. However, as much as I love the show, and as likeable as the author is, this collection of essays doesn't really stand out in the sea of post-feminist, single-gal-looking-for-love humor books. That said, if you love...

This review is from: The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (Hardcover)
I can say the love word... I need my SPACE (to read this), and I Love (the book). Chupack, a writer for the Sex and The City television series has written this collection of essays on the pangs of dating and the single life. She gives such great advice, that even her ex-husband comes to her for advice on his current relationships. She makes up words; a few are: "lone rangered" (who was that masked man who broke up with me no goodbye); "RelocationShips" (moving for the chance of a good guy); "Man-me-downs"; Halloweenies (guys who break up at Halloween, so they don't have to date you during Thanksgiving and the December holidays); and "premature 'we'jaculation" (when one of you says "we" before the other is ready). She writes about when a major magazine asked her to write about how to juggle men, when she wasn't even juggling one. She asks, if you count the number of men you have been with, do you have to count the men from drunken frat college parties? There is the story about the guy who had his doorman break up with her; there is the story of the guy who broke up with a woman on the account of her nose; and the story of each of her 17 awful dates that she went on (3 per week) in order to have one good 18th date. She decided to ask her dates to bring a CD to trade, so at least if it is a bad date, you might get a bonus of a good CD. When her date brought her ABBA, she dropped him and that idea fast. Cindy tells about her 10 day fast in order to lose weight, well not really to lose weight, but well, who knows why she went on it. You have to read it as if the character of Carrie from "Sex And The City" is reading it to you. It is much funnier that way. Nearly each story is less than 4 pages, so it is great for subway reading, or the beach (where the red flags are about swimming, not dating). In addition to the stories and dating advice, we learn about fathers' obsessions with asking daughters, "How's the car?"; the frustration of (NOT) being chosen to be a bridesmaid; the skillful spins of agents; and the idea for karaoke-like bars that women can go to do open mike rants after their bad dates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical, July 1, 2005

OK, this is the type of book that makes you believe that you are not alone out there.

I am currently "in between boyfriends" myself and am feeling kind of down.

I picked up this book and by the 10th page was laughing right out loud in the New York Subway. People were starring at me (yes, in NY City). I had tears in my eyes - this book is do dead on.

I loved everything about it. The writing, the humour (so great) and everything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!!!!, September 20, 2003

This review is from: The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (Hardcover)
I'm a happily married mother of two but I remember dating and this book rang totally true. It was so funny I was laughing out loud -- something rare, and somewhat embarassing in public. I can't imagine why the reviewer below said "it wasn't helpful" to her -- it's not supposed to be "helpful". It's not a self-help book or guide. It's just a series of astonishingly funny and clever essays. If you bought Candance Bushnell's SEX IN THE CITY hoping it would have the tone of the show, and were disappointed, THIS is the book for you. I'm guessing Cindy Chupack is the one who writes all those clever puns and sticky situations for the show. HIGHLY recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This To Feel Single & Fabulous.., December 4, 2004

This book made me feel like I was dishing with one of my girlfriends about relationships, guys, sex, and dating. I felt like I'd known Cindy my whole life. Her humor and wit make you feel better about your situations...the things that all of us women go through and understand. The truth is, women in America are staying single longer, we're dating more, experimenting more than ever before, and we need to share with one another these experiences instead of criticizing one another for our choices. I think it's fabulous, and hats off to Ms. Chupack for her wonderful writing...which I of course loved watching SATC for five years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted and Funny, December 22, 2004
By
This review is from: The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a book to heal your heart, this is not a deep, psychological book. HOWEVER, this is a great book to sit back and enjoy, laugh and sort of make light of your "single situation" whether you are single by choice or not. If you go into the book understanding this, you will really enjoy it and laugh your bottom off! I could relate to some of the stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUSLY uplifting, December 24, 2003
This review is from: The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (Hardcover)
I received this book in the mail today as a Christmas gift from my best girlfriend and honestly have struggled to put it down to finish my last minute Christmas shopping etc. I hated to have to quit reading it momentarily, and constantly found myself reading this book rather than doing what I should be! After being broken up with by my boyfriend 2 weeks ago (this is described in the book as a Halloweenie- the guy who dumps you before the big holidays roll around) my friend thought I could use this book. I honestly plan to have ALL of my girlfriends read this book because it is so amusingly honest. After reading this book I feel so liberated and know that there is life after my breakup (ok so it should be obvious that my life will go on, but ya know sometimes you just really think it wont!!). If you are looking at this book, BUY IT for yourself or a friend- it is an excellent gift! (The author also wrote for Sex and the City and Glamour- she knows her stuff)

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny, August 5, 2003
This review is from: The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays (Hardcover)
If you are "between boyfriends" or ever have been, you will most definitely recognize yourself in this book. Cindy is witty and honest that her track record in dating doesn't exactly qualify her as a dating expert. It's like the book says, she dates so you don't have to. I especially loved the section on relationship-reruns. Hello, how many times do we have to date the same man to see the GLARING RED FLAGS ALL AROUND HIM! Read it, you'll be glad you did.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this book on clearance a few years ago from Amazon to hit the free shipping limit, and to my surprise it became one of my favorite books of all time. I tend to read before I go to bed, so I especially like essay collections because you can read one or ten. The problem with this book was that I would frequently be literally laughing out loud, and that isn't too conducive to falling asleep. I think I have read it probably about 5 times and passed it to at least 4 other girl friends who have found it equally as hilarious. The stories are just too funny. Definitely worth any amount of money, on clearance or not.
