Book Description

At first glance, twenty-one-year-old Jan Weston has it all: a gorgeous boyfriend, fun friends, and wealthy parents who take care of all those pesky credit card bills.

Then her boyfriend dumps her, her friendships fall apart, and her parents cut her off. Suddenly without money, without a man, and without a plan, it's time for Jan to grow up.

Determined to get her life back on track, Jan decides it's time to make it on her own. Can she find her way as a single lady in San Diego? Can she fix her friendships, her job prospects, and her hair? And can she keep her vow that she'll never date again, even after she meets a guy who just might be perfect for her?

BETWEEN BOYFRIENDS is a sexy, hilarious story of living life, finding love, and growing up... but not necessarily in that order.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Insecurity August 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Most people who read this have called Jan a stuck-up, snobbish, boy-crazy shopaholic, but the girl I read about was insecure, and needing the love and affection she didn't get as a child. The front she put up was her armor, when actually, she felt very inferior. When her mother cuts her off from all financial aid, she has to fend for herself. When her friends come to her aid she realizes that she had not been a good friend to them in the past. She also realizes that she is not worthless when she begins to make wise decisions and get her act together. An enjoyable book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chick Lit At It's Best! July 24, 2012
By Christa
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a story of a young woman, Jan, who grows and matures as the story goes on.

When the reader is first introduced to Jan, our main character is being broken up by her boyfriend of 8 months named Mike. Jan is spoiled, rich, snobby and shallow. She appears to have more money than brains.
We learn that Jan has dropped out of college before even taking a single class, and the only ones that know are her now ex boyfriend, her girlfriends and her father. She is taking classes at a massage school to become a massage therapist on the advice of the now ex-boyfriend.
Due to the break up, she swears off dating all boys. This includes Juan, a classmate that she bonds with after being really nasty to him. She takes up new hobbies on the advice of her neighbor/ best friend.
We see her really grow when after a dinner party at her mother's house. It was during this party that her mother learns that Jan has quit school and is now becoming a massage therapist. This results in Jan being cut off financially and being disowned by her mother. Jan now has to get school paid for, get a job, and support herself completely. Gone are the days of MAC cosmetics, Starbucks Chai Teas and fancy hair salons.
Through a comedy of errors of jobs that she does get, we see her becoming less shallow, more of her own person.
It is through her relationships with her girlfriends and two new friends that she connects with, Jan blossoms into a woman, instead of a girl.

This is an excellent read! I enjoyed it from the first page and was sad to see the last one. It has a rich story line, characters that you can relate to and a story that any woman can relate to. I was able to read this book in just over 12 hours... because I enjoyed it so much. This would be a welcomed book to have with you in the summer as you travel, read at the beach or enjoy on the deck with a good glass of wine or favorite cocktail.

Highly recommended by this reviewer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Between Boyfriends Review August 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A copy of this book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Jan Weston is about to receive a hard knock that she wasn't expecting. Entitled, selfish, pretentious, and manipulative - Jan finds herself suddenly single, disowned by her family, cut off from her familial line of credit, and a nuisance to her so called friends. What's a girl to do? Can Jan survive getting a job, paying for school, living on oatmeal, wearing last year's fashions all while swearing off men? Between Boyfriends follows Jan through her hard fall to reality and rise to self reliance. Jan takes it all on the chin and keeps on swinging for the fences.

The book is a well written exploratory view into the life and inner machinations of a drama riddled juvenile group of girls. And while the exhibition is spotless, it smacks more of spectacle than of spectacular. I had an excruciating time trying to relate to the main character - hating her pity parties, drunken binges, and temper tantrums. She was sophomoric, and the more that happened to her the less I cared about what else might happen to her.

This feeling of apathy didn't last the entire book. By the end, I was glad that Jan had found her sea legs and was off to start her own adventure. But I don't think that the end completely redeems the story. And here's why: some of her issues, that the author wraps up in tiny little bows of success stories, aren't actually fully addressed. Jan's relationship with her parents is a doozy, and cutting her back into the will - doesn't exactly translate to healthy boundaries or healing.

I felt like too much time was spent in laying out the minutia of Jan's problems (social and otherwise) that the solutions were mere flashes in the pan to glaze us on to the happy ending with the bowing and the skipping. The book just wasn't the lighthearted look at college angst that I thought it was. When you pull out heavy hitters like emotional neglect and abuse, I expect some concrete resolution.

All in all, I give the book a 3 for standard stock. I truly enjoyed the writing style of the author and would be happy to read future works. :)
