4.0 out of 5 stars Between Christians and Moriscos, November 9, 2009
This review is from: Between Christians and Moriscos: Juan de Ribera and Religious Reform in Valencia, 1568-1614 (The Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science) (Hardcover)
Benjamin Ehlers studies the Moriscos of Valencia and their failure to assimilate into popular culture and religious culture. He relies heavily on the records kept by the Spanish Inquisition. He concludes by stating that the Moriscos of Spain "adopted practices such as regular confession when necessary but continued the beliefs of their ancestors in private." The problem with this lies in the records themselves. The documents he uses mostly show Moriscos on trial for not being truly converted to Christianity and continuing the practice of being a Muslim. When those are the only records examined, then most people would conclude that Moriscos had not assimilated well.
