An Excellent Addition For A Pat Metheny Group Fan,
By Bob Bender (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
If you're a Pat Metheny Group fan, especially into listening to their earlier releases (ie: American Garage, First Circle, etc), but have recently been somewhat dismayed with where PMG is headed, then this is an excellent remedy. Not to take anything away from Pat (who's still great), Brian Hughes plays the guitar with almost the same ease and quality as Pat does. Although you'll miss the styles of Lyle Mays playing keys, this album does have all the touches and musical technique of what you've been looking for. Of the 9 cuts on the album, only "Dusk" seems to be one you'd most likely skip through to get to the other pieces. Even then, you're willing to come back and listen to it once you're finished with the rest. Several others such as "The Bridge" and "Promise You", take you to the era where you knew the Pat Metheny Group wasn't afraid to go in their early stages. Brian and his band continue on with that journey. Although not heavily latin or percussive influenced as you might initally expect, this is still a charmer of an album to listen to. I definately reccomend this to add to your collection.

Brian Hughes first, and his best at that!!,
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
Unbelievably, his first release is considered his greatest accomplishment. His first most memorable song here would be "Over And Over"!That song is very memorable and is very relaxing with a little bit of western influence, but just a little short on the jazz and a spice of fusion."May Dance" is what Brian Hughes is about. That song is so good and it has been described as "Jazz meets folk music"!Now, maybe one of his greatest accomplishments of all time, and my personal favorite song "Deux Cafe" is probably the most memorable songs on this cd, it is his trademark sgnature song and it is very fusion-like.Look, my advice is to get this cd, forget pat metheny, this is Brian Hughes we are talking about, Pat Metheny is 200 years old already, this is the real deal, its time to evolve, forget metheny, just erase it out of your mind, and replace it with fusion guitarist Brian Hughes, and trust me, youll thank me later!!!

OK...Brian Hughes is not the most well known player, but he should be more recognized. He is a terrific player and writer. The band on this CD is superb, the percussion player "Rick Lazar" and the drummer " Mark Kelso" are superb.
Outside of the song "Together Again", this is a great CD. Unfortunately "Together Agaiin", does not belong or fit on the record. Its a fine song, but it simply does not belong in the bunch. A-
