An Excellent Addition For A Pat Metheny Group Fan,
By Bob Bender (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
If you're a Pat Metheny Group fan, especially into listening to their earlier releases (ie: American Garage, First Circle, etc), but have recently been somewhat dismayed with where PMG is headed, then this is an excellent remedy. Not to take anything away from Pat (who's still great), Brian Hughes plays the guitar with almost the same ease and quality as Pat does. Although you'll miss the styles of Lyle Mays playing keys, this album does have all the touches and musical technique of what you've been looking for. Of the 9 cuts on the album, only "Dusk" seems to be one you'd most likely skip through to get to the other pieces. Even then, you're willing to come back and listen to it once you're finished with the rest. Several others such as "The Bridge" and "Promise You", take you to the era where you knew the Pat Metheny Group wasn't afraid to go in their early stages. Brian and his band continue on with that journey. Although not heavily latin or percussive influenced as you might initally expect, this is still a charmer of an album to listen to. I definately reccomend this to add to your collection.

Brian Hughes first, and his best at that!!,
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
Unbelievably, his first release is considered his greatest accomplishment. His first most memorable song here would be "Over And Over"!That song is very memorable and is very relaxing with a little bit of western influence, but just a little short on the jazz and a spice of fusion."May Dance" is what Brian Hughes is about. That song is so good and it has been described as "Jazz meets folk music"!Now, maybe one of his greatest accomplishments of all time, and my personal favorite song "Deux Cafe" is probably the most memorable songs on this cd, it is his trademark sgnature song and it is very fusion-like.Look, my advice is to get this cd, forget pat metheny, this is Brian Hughes we are talking about, Pat Metheny is 200 years old already, this is the real deal, its time to evolve, forget metheny, just erase it out of your mind, and replace it with fusion guitarist Brian Hughes, and trust me, youll thank me later!!!

OK...Brian Hughes is not the most well known player, but he should be more recognized. He is a terrific player and writer. The band on this CD is superb, the percussion player "Rick Lazar" and the drummer " Mark Kelso" are superb.
Outside of the song "Together Again", this is a great CD. Unfortunately "Together Agaiin", does not belong or fit on the record. Its a fine song, but it simply does not belong in the bunch. A-

This is still one of my favourite guitar based albums from the last twenty years. In the early 90's I performed one of the selections, "And Dreaming" with a latin jazz quartet at an outdoor stage as part of the Fringe Festival entertainment on Broadway Avenue in Saskatoon. Although I played keyboards for that gig, it was a blast to play, especially since we had congas and drums. I have also played the guitar part on other occasions. Thanks, Brian for a great tune and the memories! Not many tunes inspire other musicians as this one has, so check it out - it's part of an album that still sounds great today.

"Still Life Talking" Reprise,

The comparisons to late '80s Metheny are right on. Actually, this CD was originally released in 1990 (not 1996). This little-known, underrated guitarist from Canada is a model of consistency. I had the good fortune of seeing him live in Niagara a few years ago. While I'll agree Metheny has evolved and is, overall, more versatile as a musician, I preferred his late '80s efforts. Fortunately, late '80s Metheny is Brian Hughes, and he has not deviated from this style. "Promise You" is a smooth jazz and Weather Channel standard from the early '90s, and is the finest track on the CD. His guitar work on "...And Dreaming" is vibrant and vintage '80s Metheny. If you like this sound, check out Brian's follow-ups "Straight To You" and "One 2 One."

By Big Al "al" (Los Angeles,CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
If You listen to Pat Metheny he is the greatest musican around but watch out because his brother brian hughes is even better. There music is so similar you just have to call them related. Promise You is the true key I would like to see both of these guys on stage together plus Mike Metheny on Trumpet.

I have heard a lot of jazz guitar and I have to say that after hearing this CD... it's one of the best in the genre! Brian Hughes does sound like Pat Metheny except for the tracks listed below.
1. ...And Dreaming 2. May Dance 3. Promise You (A really great tune!) 4. Over and Over You won't be disapointed with this CD! Don't miss it!!

Pat Metheny ? Or Brian who?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Between Dusk & Dreaming (Audio CD)
What you dont understand Bob is that Pat Metheny only experimented with Brazilian Jazz flavors for a while during the 80s when it was hip. But Pat Metheny made it hip. Someone with Pat methenys geinus has to keep on moving and changing and trying new things. Pat metheny Evolves. Brian hughes stands still.
