Psychodelic Grunge,

Wonder what the world would have been like if grunge had been around in 1967? Apparently Love Battery did, and decided to do something about it.As the Seattle music scene became trendy in the early 90's, there were quite a few bands who suddenly got their chance to be hear. Love Battery was one of them, but somehow they still kind of got lost in the shuffle, which is a shame since there's some good stuff here. The opening (title) track found its way onto a couple of compilations, and it's catchy in both its melody and its rhythm. The other songs are a little different, but Love Battery has a great ear for a hook. Lots of wah-wah and fuzz. Other standout tracks include "Orange", "Easter" and "Ibiza Bar" but "Highway of Souls" might be the best song on the album. Of the other bands of the time, I'd say they're most like the Screaming Trees.

Love Battery is a band that didn't get the national attention that some of the other bands in the scene received. It's strange because what you hear in this album is a sound so complete and well-crafted. Even though lyrics aren't usually a big selling point for me when I listen to music, the lyrics on this album are thoughtful enough to catch my attention. Their sound is a heavy breaking, melody rich flood of guitar power gone hard. This music is energetic but well balanced.
You'll hear shades of Pavement and Screaming Trees but they weren't trying to sound like other successful bands in the 90's. Maybe that is partly why they were left behind. One main difference that Love Battery carried against the grunge giants of the day is that their music, while being unflinchingly grunge, is not dismal or morose. The result was a band with it's own voice, original music that captured the zeitgeist. Seattle grunge found its way out of town and onto MTV but there's more to be discovered. Most of those who enjoyed the megalithic grunge bands of the early 90's would be surprised to hear what else was happening back then.
