Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this 1962 album from the American singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist. Oscar Brown Jr. has been called "genius" by Dorothy Kilgallen, "exceptional" by Steve Allen, "beautiful" by Eleanor Roosevelt and "authentically hip" by Nat Hentoff. A man of extraordinary talents who became a star in a phenomenally short time. On this album he sings 12 original songs including two musical settings of poems by other writers. The orchestral arrangements for two - 'Mr. Kicks' and 'Hazel's Hips' - are by Quincy Jones.

Oscar Brown Jr was the voice of blacks during the 1960s. In a way, a black Bob Dylan. However, Brown could actually sing as well as write important songs. He covered the Black experience and so much more. This is my favorite of all his albums. There are 4 songs in particular that just hit me hard when I first heard them. "Mr Kicks" is from a broadway style show about a demon who came to earth to collect souls. The song swings and the lyrics are so bitter and so true. "World Full of Gray" is a song that could have been written by many different people but only Oscar was able to capture the pain and longing of seeing one thing and desperately wanting something else. "Lucky Guy" is really bitter. Love his use of the catch phrase "and all of the true love that........money can buy". Finally, and really the only song here that is "only" about the Black experience, "Elegy". A summation of a life that is about the Black experience but could also be about anyone who lives, loves and experiences. The rest of the songs on this CD are also excellent. I highly recommend this CD. Oscar Brown Jr was one of the greats, even if he didn't get the attention he deserved.

Such a joy to listen to OB after so many years. Until recently, I didn't know that so much of his work is available.

But these disappointments: the live in Wash., DC, album is scarce and very expensive, and I can't find his elegy for JFK, which I remember as powerful and sessitive.

This remains my favorite Oscar Brown Jr album. It contains the definitive versions of "Hazel's Hips" (thanks to Quincy Jones' sexy almost sleazy arrangement) and Mr. Kicks. Oscar with a big band is the way Oscar was meant to be heard! Give it a listen!

A few years ago while in Tokyo, I bought the CD "Oscar Brown Jr/Mr. Kicks. It has all of the tunes on this CD and all of the tunes on the CD "Sin & Soul and Then Some." If you can find this CD on the Jazz Line label, it has TWENTY-FOUR of Oscar Brown Jr.'s songs. The songs are of good recording quality, and to get that many songs is a great deal. I am not sure if it is available in the US. My copy says that it was made in Italy, digitally remastered and manufactured and distributed by Red Lines. I hope this is helpful for other devoted fans of OBJr. like myself.

If you only listen to one song on this CD ("Hymn To Friday) has become a listening ritual in the Chicago-land area. It is played every Friday at 2P.M. CST on WDCB radio. Here is the link if you want to hear the song at that time, or just buy the CD. [...]
