From Library Journal
Like Frances Karttunen's Between Worlds (LJ 1/94), this volume describes the lives of individuals who acted as intermediaries between cultures. While Karttunen includes intermediaries from cultures around the globe, Szasz focuses on 14 individuals who were "culture brokers" between the native Americans and whites throughout 300 years of North American history. Karttunen and Szasz both examine intercultural communication, but Karttunen's focus is on the individual and the effect that acting as a bridge between cultures had on each interpreter. In contrast, the contributors to Szasz's volume focus on the effect the broker had on the communities they bridged. The historical context in which each person lived and the contribution the cultural intermediary made to the history of native North American peoples is emphasized. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.
