5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from a missed genius.

As you guys may have heard, UK Soul's original, Lynden David Hall, died on 14th Februrary 2006 after a long battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. 'In Between Jobs' was the last album he released.
And Hall does it again, producing an album almost as masterful and eclectic as 'Medicine 4 My Pain' and more consistent as 'The Other Side.' It seems that he wanted to unleash his last ounce of creative energy into this album, and it shows.
From the brilliant opening track, the Curtis Mayfield-esque 'Don't Hide Your Heart' to the early Prince-inspired 'Day Off', to the Stevie Wonder-style funk/soul of 'Stay Faithful' Hall isn't here to sound like the likes of Lemar or Craig David as he has been doing that way before them. Even more of a bonus, his songwritng improves with each album. The title track, 'Pimps, Playas and Hustlers', 'Memories and Souvenirs' and 'Blessings' shows a maturity in his songwriting which is close to maximum fulfillment which unfortunately will never be.
So do yourself a favour and not only purchase this great album, but his other two albums as well to help live the memory of this incredible genius. RIP Lynden David Hall.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truely remarkable artist who will be sorely missed, February 18, 2006
This review is from: In Between Jobs (Audio CD)
An artist whos music touched alot of people, and who was never really given the recognision he truely deserved, nut for those who knew of him there can be no doubt that Lynden was not only an amazing singer, but also writer and producer. He was one of only a handful of British artist who could really compete with the Americans, and with more publicity he could without a doubt have become one of not only Britains best soul/R&B artists but the worlds. RIP Lynden. You'll be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do your thing and shine!, February 17, 2006

This review is from: In Between Jobs (Audio CD)
UK soul singer/song writer Lynden David Hall passed away aged 31 on February 14th 2006, after a 2 year battle with cancer. As well as being a review of his most recent fab CD, this is a tribute to him, a genius whose life ended before its time.

Easy going, breezy, understated yet classy and complex. Those words best describe the man, and his music. `In between jobs' was his third release and his first on an independent label. Sadly, it flew largely under the radar but I hope everyone rediscovers it, as well as his other CDs; `Medicine 4 my pain' and `The other side'.

Think Marvin Gaye and Al Green with a futuristic vibe and you've got the musical style. Rich harmonies, intelligent lyrics, and a jazzy/soulful feel.

Standout to me is definitely the lilting `Day off' with wah wah guitars, delicate percussion, and his sensual soulful voice singing about going a place where it don't rain on your day off, and the phone don't ring. This song is simply amazing.

There's the stirring ballad `Still here with you' which starts off with acoustic guitar and finger snaps and Al Green style vocals flowing from lower register to falsetto with ease.

The light hip hop feel of the midtempo `Eventually' with a pulsing bassline features rapping and singing urging one to `do your thing and shine/be what God intended you to be'.

The retro sounding `Memories and souvenirs' is a midtempo song reminiscing about things that remind him of an ended relationship. It sounds similar to stuff by D'Angelo, Dwele or Musiq.

In a similar vein is `Pimps, playas and hustlers' with excellent organ and harmonies, and social conscious lyrics. Simple, yet intricate instrumentation.

However brief his life was, he leaves behind a rich musical legacy. Way beyond his peers, humble, unassuming and simply mega talented. Do yourself a favour and pick up this amazing CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Earth Star phased into An Heavenly Star, February 26, 2006
This review is from: In Between Jobs (Audio CD)
Firstly, my warmest reflections to the family and friends of Linden David Hall on hearing of his untimely and sad demise from our plane to one of higher enlightenment. The first time I heard this man's music, I was truly touched by his warm commanding voice and knew that Britain has another great talent. Although I have not been fortunate to have met this man, I knew from his music that he was a sensitive embracing soul and in a way through his music, I felt as if indeed, i knew him. His music touches one in so many different and enveloping ways that help in the elevation of one's spirit. I was so surprised when this beautiful soul was dropped by his record label. It just reinforces the fact that the music business in these times do not truly appreciate, recognise and overstand a truly great talent. This man's music will sweep you along in its many currents and if you appreciate good music, you will just let go of your hang ups and enjoy a ride of melodious cascading freedom. I recommend that you should buy all of his musical works without further procrastination. Linden, may your soul find eternal rest and peace with the Creator.Peaceful journey in your new adventures in another time and space. R.I.P. Lynden you will be missed

5.0 out of 5 stars God added another great Voice to his heavenly CHOIR, February 26, 2006
This review is from: In Between Jobs (Audio CD)
Lynden David Hall (7 May 1974 - 14 February 2006) was a singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer. Born in Wandsworth, South London, he won the 'best newcomer' accolade at the 1998 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards.

In 1999, he was the first UK performer ever voted "Best Male Artist" by the readers of Britain's Blues & Soul magazine. His debut album, Medicine For My Pain, plus the singles Do I Qualify and Sexy Cinderella, had an instant appeal to soul fans in the UK and elsewhere, but it wasn't until his work got the remix treatment that he got his major breakthrough.

Hall appeared in the hit film Love Actually in 2003, where he sang at the wedding of the characters played by Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Two years later, he released his third studio album In Between Jobs on the independent label Random Records.

In 2004, Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He passed away on St. Valentine's Day, 2006, after having lost his battle with the disease at the age of 31.

I have owned this CD since last fall, but have put off sharing my views, because I couldn't find the right words to describe them. Yesterday, Lynden David Hall passed away at the tragically young age of 31, and this has prompted me to put my feelings with reference to this CD on paper. After two albums for major labels, this CD was released on the independently owned Random Records. (Here in the UK) The only thing hurting this CD is exposure. Believe me, if this was given was right promotion, it would do well. For me there are three exceptional highlights to this CD that make it worth the price of the whole CD alone. My favourite track is `Memories and Souvenirs'. Over a Hammond sounding background, Lynden describes how this is all he has left from a broken relationship. This is quite stunningly simple and beautiful. This is then followed by `Eventually', where Lynden raps, and is joined by an unknown MC, about social situations that affect all of us (injustice, misuse of power, etc) Again this is a simple arrangement, which is kind of old skool sounding. Lastly there is `Day off'. With a wah-wah sounding guitar backdrop, Lynden pleads with his lady to take some time off from the daily rat race of life, to chill with him. Gorgeous. With only 3 CDs worth of material available, Lynden has left behind a body of work that is a testament to his GOD given ability to write, produce, arrange, and sing. I for one will miss that sweet falsetto sounding voice. R.I.P
