"Between the Lies" is a contemporary Dickensian-like tale of two teams on their determined path to the Super Bowl filled with surrounding surprising stories of "how to get there." More than that, you will find artistically weaved into this novel interesting characters, love stories, jealousies, and events that will keep you reading this winter either in front of the fire or on the beach. Knowledge of football is not a prerequisite for enjoyment of this fascinating work of fiction by a Hall of Fame coach who knows all the ins and outs - backwards and forwards - about the four downs.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Levy's use of humor while developing the characters made the book a great read. I loved learning how and why trades and drafts are decided upon during the annual NFL draft. The use of names, in various forms, of the author's former players in Buffalo made the book even more fun to read as there was no doubt where the names came from. Interwoven in the story was a warm portrayal of the love shared by the protagonist and his wife. Sometimes I found myself laughing out loud as I tried to figure out how the book would end.

Between the Lies offers a unique, non-predicable approach to the game of football, and I was fascinated by the non-traditional scope of the drama behind closed doors; not just the play-by-play on the gridiron. The characters were well developed and multi-dimensional, and I couldn't help but identify with the need for social justice and for those characters that demonstrated a strong moral compass to be victorious. Coach Levy demonstrated a strong sense of personal ethics, without being sanctimonious, which provided the reader with a special appreciation for the game. One of the most enjoyable components was his ability to weave a wonderful sense of humor throughout the story with particular care given to the characters' names. Yet, ultimately, Coach Levy's passion and love of the game was the shining glory.

I went "old school," actually read a hardcover copy of Marv Levy's new book, Between the Lies. Firstly, I urge all e-book readers, to enjoy the lost art of reading an actual book; the experience is relaxing and a lot more intimate. In fact, start with Between the Lies.

If you have found your way to this review page, you probably already know the premise of this book. I will spare you any regurgitated synopsis.

The reader of this book will be privy to professional football's complex inner circle via a fictional twist. Throughout the book we are treated to interesting and relatable characters. If you have followed Marv Levy's career you probably will be able to recognize whom the fictional characters are based upon. Though, I could not tell whom Coach Randy Dolbermeier was based on . . . is Mr. Levy protecting the guilty? I found myself wondering how Mr. Levy must have enjoyed taking literary license dispensing character names, such as; driver extraordinaire, Zig Zag Zizzo, L.A. Leopards Quarterback, Q.T. Pye, and L.A. Leopard's owner Cedric B. Medill.

As you delve further into the story line, it becomes apparent that the book deals with an age-old philosophical principle, ethics. The core characters are dealing with a heavy burden, cheating and scandal in the high stakes business of professional sports. The interweaving of professional football (Super bowl teams) and ethics is brilliantly played out in this book. Like any good story, this underlying dilemma makes you analyze your own priorities, what would you do if you were in the protagonist position? It is quite obvious what position Mr. Levy would take. Between the Lies. What Else Would You Rather Read!
